Smells like human suffering!
Lush has released a new Bath Ballistic called 'Guantanamo Garden', a product 'Designed to tell the story of Guantánamo, the ballistic is colored orange like the jumpsuits worn by prisoners and is scented with traces of synthetic civet to give it a hint of animalistic, raw, dark feeling.'

The best part? As it dissolves, a picture of a prisoner floats to the surface of your bath to remind you of their struggles!

Despite this product apparently being meant to 'raise awareness' for Reprieve, none of the profits will be going toward the group.

There is some debate among Lush fans over this oh-so-edgy idea for a product. After all, nothing says 'I care' like spending an assload of money for a bath fizzy!

Edit on 13th March: Lush have decided that all profits from the bath ballistic will now go to the charity so they can have some funds to go with their raised awareness. Isn't a little bad customer reaction life surprising?

Holy Guantánamoly, LUSH -- what happened? Did too many people stop complaining about the tackiness of 'Flosty Gritter?'

'Flosty Gritter?'

I'm scared to try the forums of blank text and scary wank, so...

What is that?

There's also wank on the US Lush forum here; other links within that thread go to subforums that are for registered users only, but that link should be freely viewable. Also it's on your standard EZboard rather than the incredible pile of tangled crap that is the UK forum.

Everyone's been concentrating on the product, but I'm all O.o!!! about the fact that they're making their employees wear political panties. Are they wearing their underwear on top of their clothes? Or, if not, how the hell are they going to know whether the staff complies-- are they going to have a panty check? The product is fucked up enough, but that to me is beyond nuts.

What? I -- what? Also, political underwear is generally expensive, right? Are people being compensated for this?

If the staff only wear the panties, I except traffic will increase in the stores even if sales don't.

Don't forget the thing a couple of months back when they were all about "naked" products--reduced packaging, sort of--and proudly posted photos on the website of various clerks going about their business bare-assed except for an apron.

The Lush closest to me didn't do that, but they did have an 'employee striptease'--as the daily sales of 'naked' products got higher, employees would remove items of clothing. I went in there and it didn't look like it was working terribly well, since everyone was clothed. I know I held off on buying anything so those poor bastards could keep their shirts on a little longer.

I'm still trying to figure out how luxuriating in the tub, inhaling the strange scent of orange blossoms and civet, and watching the expanding image of a nameless prisoner float in your bath water will motivate someone to click/visit the Reprieve website.

And now they've added fashionistas to the mix with orange bloomers?

Never thought I'd find myself glad to have urticaria.

Ok, so I had no idea what civet smells like, so I did a little Google search ("civet smells like") and found this article that seems to have been in the NYTimes, and that made me simultaneous LOL and EWWW!!! at the same time.

I also now want to go sniff a lot of perfume. Mmm.

I went out and bought a small bottle of Rose Poivrée after I read that article - I just had to know what civet smells like. I can definitely pick it out in the perfume, but I doubt I'd be able to put my finger on what it is if I didn't already know. Overall, it's an almost unbearably heady scent.

This actually reminds me of the popcorn-as-packing-material BS in that I can totally imagine the brainstorming meeting where they thought it up, and it seemed like a GREAT idea to the halfdozen silly hippies in the room, and... then they went and executed this plan without really thinking it through. And lo, we end up with popcorn bits stuck all over our soap while we sit naked in the bath staring at soggy images of prisoners.

All the proceeds Lush make from Guantanamo Garden (ex. V.A.T) go to Reprieve.
