Chicago: not New York, dammit
The LJ community [info]uchicago is, well, a community populated by students and alumni of the University of Chicago, a fine institution on the South Side of the city. Normal discussion includes questions about professors, where to get an apartment, and the general whining all students always engage in about their school.

Enter [info]gracchi, who has some misconceptions about the city itself to correct:

First: It makes the city boring to walk around. Walk from, say, East Harlem straight down into UES, down into midtown, down into the East Village there's always something to see, people to talk to. Same for a walk in Tokyo, in London, in Naples. Walk from the Loop out to Wicker Park, up to Logan Square: you get swathes of residential, highway underpasses, some (usually closed!) businesses. There's a good video rental store, sure, and an very nice Costa Rican restaurant (Irazu) on the way: but the walk itself is a horrible bore.

Second: It makes the city feel dangerous. People, lots of people, are the best imaginable security system. When you walk down a long, dark, empty Chicago street, it feels dangerous. Doesn't mean it IS dangerous. I've never been mugged. But there's this residual fear there, at least for me. There's a lot of cops here, but not a lot of people. But that might be for the better, because-

2. The white people are horrible.

Midwestern-Masters of fake nice, white Chicagoans will smile at you and say have a nice day. But they won't chat you up like in NY, and they won't ever surprise you with anything. Sure, there are some crazy oldtimers around - but most every white person younger than 60 is a dreadful bores. You don't hear interesting things on the street (like in NY.) and you want to strangle most of the people you see -- especially around Lakeview.

In short:

I don't 'not like' Chicago: I believe it to be a miserable place, and I take its defenders to be defenders of mediocrity and misery.

The responses are, naturally, a little annoyed:

condescending. that's the word i was looking for.

You've got to look at this post for what it really is: backhand masturbation for New York.

I knew a chick just like that who lived in BJ while I was there. Couldn't stop going on about how stupid Americans were and how terrible Chicago was compared to NYC.

And all I could think was, "Shut the ever-living fuck up and go back East." I've got your "fake nice" right here, pal.

And it comes out that this was such a pressing moral issue, he had to create an LJ to put all those smug people in their place:

Yes, that's right. I've been following the community for some time now (there's often good info here); and decided that the boosterism needed to be countered, a little.

Not to mention the OP's opinion of himself:

On People: I consider myself endlessly fascinating, and ask all of those around me to be the same. Seriously: I don't demand that people cultivate themselves to become living artworks. That would be nice, but it won't happen until we overcome capitalism. What I would like is if people would be more colorful, more engaging, more willing to talk to strangers. I get that in other cities; not here.

(New Yorkers: you guys talk to strangers? Really?)

Favorite side thread is where it derails into a discussion about New Jersey.

Disclaimer: I am an alumna of the U of C, and enjoyed Chicago a lot.

But they won't chat you up like in NY, and they won't ever surprise you with anything.

I lived in New York for five years, and I think the closest I ever got to being chatted up by a random passerby was something along the lines of "HEY, FUCK YOU!" except with more swearing. Unless they mean chatted up like someone trying to pick up on me, in which case it still had more swearing but also had more lewd remarks about my ass.

No fair! There is no fake politeness in the Midwest! We don't strike up fascinating conversations with random strangers because we're far too busy honestly hoping that they have nice days.

Hahahaha, New Yorkers being randomly nice to people? Yeah right.

(also, re: the New Jersey thread: I think that's possibly the only time I've seen people actually saying nice things about New Jersey. And here I was all prepared to have to go "it's not all bad, really!" and probably get laughed at by the rest of you.)

I have a friend from New York City. Her story is that when she first came to California, people would make polite conversation at the bus stops and so forth and she was so weirded out that she asked her local friends "why do people keep talking to me?"

I know nothing about Chicago beyond which state it's in, so I have nothing to add to this conversation.

I'm not a big fan of Chicago (there's something disconcerting about the city that I don't like and can't really place, but I can't explain it), but I'm not a huge fan of New York City, either. The people who live in both cities are fine, but I'm not chomping at the bit to live either place. Chicago has some of the most awesome museums, though.

I like LA and London, though. People in both places are really friendly (God, you should see how some of the people reacted excitedly when they found out I was American in London, mainly because I "didn't really have an accent"), and the scenery is pretty fantastic.

My favourite one is the butthurt New-Jerseyan:

You know, fuck you big metropolitan people and fuck your pollution and fuck your oppressive cultural standards and fuck your many varieties of all night ethnic restaurants. You make fun, but when you want cheap hookers and blow, or a weekend at the Shore, or a go-to joke to break the ice, where do you turn to? That's right, you go to the New Jersey suburbs. You need us wayyy more than we need you. We have tourists coming all the way from motherfuckin' Kansas!

NJ has always been there for you, but then you turn your back on her to chase after the first blond city in a skirt. ;_;

I agree. This is just such a pity. Next time I see [info]gracci around town I will make a concerted effort to surprise s/h/it, to remedy the situation, but since mugging's apparently a no-no (and NEVER HAPPENS IN NEW YORK, CITY OF CITIES), I'll have to be creative. Which Field Museum exhibit do you think it would be most surprising to wake up to find oneself part of? I always kind of thought the Tsavo exhibit needed something more, but the big pyramid's kind of a classic.

I hate Chicago but that's only because I'm from St. Louis and I simply refuse to like any city that houses those damnable Cubs.

And as for fake politeness... errr. We don't have any of that in Missouri. At least not in St. Louis where I live. I don't think we're overly friendly like in the southern portion of the state but we're certainly not mean either. Overall it's pretty much, "You ignore me, I ignore you."

Is that polite? lol. Who knows.

On People: I consider myself endlessly fascinating,

When I think about me, I touch myself.

and ask all of those around me to be the same.

I am the alpha and omega of all that is right in the world. Others should use me as their example. OBEY ME! OBEY MY DOG!

Seriously: I don't demand that people cultivate themselves to become living artworks.

People can't all be as wonderful and fabulous as I am. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't try! *preens* We need to be realistic here.

That would be nice,

Super, even!

but it won't happen until we overcome capitalism.

While I berate your city, I think it's important to remind you of the evils it was founded upon- industry, the railroad, and the American dollar - No matter how irrelevant it is to my actual arguement.

What I would like is if people would be more colorful, more engaging, more willing to talk to strangers.

Why can't you all be special snowflakes like me? All I want is a friend. I need friends. Why don't you all love me? :(

I get that in other cities; not here.

Cater to me, Chicagoans. You suck!

If any of you are ever in Chicago, I recommend Moonstruck, which is full of delicious chocolate. I can't tell you how many times this summer I had a peanut butter milkshake from there for lunch. Also, Wow Bao. Also, hot dogs.

... Also, I shouldn't post when I'm hungry.

Caveat: I am in a flyover state so therefore I am an easily-amused hickblossom, but: I have been known to be amused by having a lengthy conversation with nutty 80-year-old guys in the middle of nowhere who hand me things like arsenic bottles and walrus peens and promise to show me their mammoth cave and don't mean it as a euphemism. I've found myself surrounded by alpacas for no discernable reason other than an incorrect atlas, and talked to a lady whose yard is a certifiable lawn gnome habitat - because I don't expect that shit will happen to me unless I go out and find it. Waiting for it to come to you and then bitching when it doesn't is the mark of the banal, not someone who's the epitome of culture and excitement. I have no use for people who can't make their own fun. It's not the universe's job to entertain you without getting nothing in return. And in Chicago of all places, that takes special effort. Find a fucking pub at least, it's not hard, and talk to the bartender about what goes on.

I've held a grudge against all of Illinois ever since I was forced to go out there on business, and got to deal with several days of horrible food poisoning from an undercooked burger.

And the food was crap in the suburbs where I was most of the time. (Except for two really excellent seafood restaurants we found.)

Also, maybe I was in all the wrong places, but as far as I could tell the entire city of Chicago closes up at 9:00 PM on weekdays.

And what's with all the toll roads?

(I may be a little bitter.)

That's funny, because being chatted up is one of the things New Yorkers BITCH ABOUT when they come to L.A. It's like they think it's completely unnatural to want to talk to a stranger, and life should be lived with one's face hidden behind one's collar. Dude, it's too fucking WARM here to be suspicious all the time.

There's a lot to see and like in the US. Of course it isn't flyover country. The midwest, maybe, is flyover country. It's flat and ugly. There's not much to do and the food is very bad.

Sweetheart, you do know that airliners don't beam their food directly up from the flyover states they happen to be flying over, don't you?

Because seriously, what I can think of to recommend Ohio: Hocking Hills, Eden Park in Cincinnati, this tea house in Columbus whose name I forget, the hippie Tex-Mex restaurant in Athens, and those chocolate-peanut butter buckeye candies.

JUST TODAY, actually, waiting for the Times Square- Grand Central shuttle, some random nondescript guy walked by, turned to the girl behind me, and said:

"You have got to bt the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I just thought you should know."

and disappeared into the crowd. God's honest truth. I promptly turned to her (she was very pretty in a colorful and sparkling way, like the bright jewelry trendy people wear to art openings) and remarked, "Don't you just love New York?"
