stubby kitties --> miniwank
Cute Overload, in addition to being full of cute animals, is often also full of wank. Most posts contain at least one accusation of animal cruelty, and this one, about a Scottish Fold cat with exceptionally stubby legs, is no exception.

Comments about animal breeding begin on the very first comment and only continue down the thread.

Adopt a shelter cat!

This sucks. Animal-cruelty is what it is.

CAPSLOCK OF EMPHASIS!

None of us would advocate breaking puppies' legs just because they can look really cute in casts.

I don't know about you, but I plan to go break some puppy legs later this afternoon!

I love how it doesn't even matter that several of the first commenters pointed out that the cats don't have any problems from having short legs and folded ears, and yet people keep going "THEY MUST! THEY MUUUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T LOOK NORMAL TO ME!" It's kind of like the kitty borg or something. "We are the kitty borg. Prepare to be enlongated. Cuteness is futile."

Also: Breeding is always wrong. Fwuh? Okay, I know everyone has to neuter or spay all their pets all the time because everything humans do is always wrong and all that, but without breeding at all... we would have a serious lack of kitty on Earth.

Nope, they're not like dachshunds at all. Dachshunds were bred "to scent, chase, and flush badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature was to hunt rabbits" (Wikipedia), while munchkins were bred for the cuteness (I think?).

I USE WIKIPEDIA AND MY BRAIN FOR INFORMATION! Clearly those who asked their vet or have one of their own HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.

Ah. So it's okay to breed dogs into medical issues because they are profiting us by hunting, but breeding harmless mutations into house pets is BAD AND WRONG.

>_<;

Or something.

I have internets in purple and easter-egg pastels (with chocolate center), which would you like?

A friend of mine bought a purebred dog, and someone jumped on her for it.

They were not deterred when we pointed out the only dogs up for adoption in the area were huskies or larger--and fair few of them at that--and she wanted a small dog. Apparently even when the problem is solved, it's still ebol.

I must be a true devil. I have had four purebred golden retrievers. :[ I suppose my one rescue dog doesn't make up for it, either. But I wouldn't give any of them up for anything, even if it does make me evil. They're my little demon loves and they shall aid me in the destruction of all that is good.

I have a similar one. Friend of mine adopted a purebred cocker spaniel, through a rescue operation. People gave her so much crap because of the whole "Owning a purebred is wrong, because we have sooo many mutts in need of good homes!"

It almost comes off like, "Screw the purebreds, only mutts deserve a good life!"

I've heard this song so many times, it's taken me a while to articulate my exasperation.

Your average pet owner, or pet owner hopeful, does not owe diddlysquat to the population of stray and rescue cats. If they choose to adopt a shelter cat, that's good on them; it's compassionate and kind and undoubtedly they will form a warm bond with the animal. But nobody's obligated to do so, and choosing to adopt a pet store cat or a purebred cat is their choice too.

Someone who chooses to get a cat at one of those places rather than adopting a shelter cat is not a horrid person shirking their sworn duty to animals, any more than a person is a horrid greedy miser unless they fail to donate at least 30% of their monthly paycheck to charities. Giving to charity, or providing a home for an orphan or stray, is over and above the minimum decency that is expected of people; it should be applauded, not taken for granted. *hmphs*

Exactly. CallipygosConsort got a Savannah cat with his ex -- it was her idea, because her college roommate was a breeder -- and when they broke up his ex got custody. He's said that someday he'll want to get another cat, and has said he definitely wants another Savannah. I was surprised for 2.3 seconds that he wouldn't want a shelter cat, but then I realized that well, he'd fallen totally in love with the breed, and it was his business. (Besides, the Savannah they'd gotten is gorgeous -- he's the kitten at the very bottom left corner of this page.)

Some people just have particular preferences in one thing or another, it doesn't make them spoiled or anything.

I'd gotten the icon from someone else, I forget who -- personally, I don't mind, just giving the heads-up.

Savannahs can be very smart, but can sometimes be a little leery of strangers (CallipygosConsort's gotten him back for a few visits, and he's always hissed at me when he sees me; although, to be fair, that may not be a breed thing, but may be more a feline version of the little kid meeting Dad's new girlfriend and saying "You're not my mommy.")

Our savannah is a little on the skittish side, but IMO it all really depends on how close your particular savannah is to the original serval and individual temperament.

Both savannahs and bengals are gorgeous, athletic, and so smart it's scary. And if you're in the right place at the right time, you can still get a rescue cat. Alot of people will get a savannah/bengal, expecting them to be a pretty decoration that you have to feed from time to time, not realizing that they need attention and stimulus, and when the cat acts out they get rid of the poor thing. Sad, but that's how we ended up getting both of our bengals. Our savannah was the only one we actually got from the breeder.

Eeee, Ocicats!! They're gorgeous. They're definitely on the list of breeds I might buy if I ever bought a cat (we've had six in my lifetime and they've all been strays or shelter cats, but one of them is a clear Ragdoll mix, and the tabby we used to have was probably part Siamese. Interestingly, those two are the least intelligent of the cats we've had).

Here's where I'm going to come across like a wanking ass, but I can't help myself. I think Savannahs are some of the most beautiful cats in the world, but in some ways, I wish they were never invented.

Not because they aren't awesome, they are, but because everyone around here who owns one is a total yuppie, who can't *stand* the idea of having something that isn't expensive, that they can't show off and say, "Yes, this is my multi-thousand dollar pet, very rare you know."

Your friend sounds like he's got the right idea and loves the breed whether it's a million dollars or six cents, which is terrific, but oh, I get tired of people who just can't get a pet, purely for the sake of the animal itself, but must get some exotic creature, mostly for the bragging rights.

Er, sorry. Again, I hope this doesn't come across like I'm slamming your friend, he sounds like one of the few people who should have a Savannah cat.

*Goes to find tissues*

No, I hear you, and I'd have thought the same thing if he had a different attitude about it. But fortunately his attitude about Savannahs wasn't about "oh, must have a purebred because they are speshul and unique", it's about, "awwww, Rupert was just such a great cat!"

Kind of like how my family's dog when I was a kid was arguably one of those poodle-mixed-breed designer things that are so big now (I think they call them "Spoodles" now, but the cocker spaniel/poodle mixes used to be "cockapoos" and poeple've been doing that for a while), and honestly, our dog was awesome. So I get just as sick of hearing of labradoodles and goldendoodles and whatever-oodles as the next person, but....they all look a little like K.C., so whenever I see a picture of them, a part of me does go "....awwwwww!"

Oh, yes...Savannahs are gorgeous. Bengal cats are also beautiful and have such wonderful personalities. A friend of mine has two, and they are the sweetest boys.

And I understand about falling in love with a breed. For me, it's Maine Coons. I have a couple right now, and the fur getting everywhere is still worth it, IMO.

Yes! Exactly. It's not a responsibility. And even if there is overbreeding and people who breed without knowing how to avoid getting puppies who will be sick or disabled or what have you, there's also a reason for it, and not everyone can handle a dog with this trait or that trait.

Oh God, the amount of cr*p I got for choosing to buy a ragdoll kitten, instead of one from a shelter. It's like 'shuddup' I like ragdolls, I like their appearance, I like that they are cuddly, I like that they have pretty blue eyes, I like their temperment.

And I'm the one whose going to feed it, and care for it, and clean out it's litter for the next 15-18 years, so I think I have a right to choose what pet I want. I'm getting a cat which I'm going to be responsible for. He's not going to be let out to kill feral animals, he's not going to be neglected. I'm taking responsibility here, getting a kitten from a reputable breeder, whose cats are horribly spoiled and cared for. This whole mentality of 'if you're not adopting a sheltered animal, you're contributing to the evils of animal neglect' is dumb…and stupid, so there!

I have a feeling people respond to CO like they respond to celebrity blogs. They have a narrow, skewered view of what "normal" should be, and they apply it to whatever they see in the posts. Going "OMG this kitty must be suffering it is not right" is just the self-righteous version of going "LOL Britney's so fat".

No, see, all cats in the universe must be spayed/neutered because any kittens ever being born anywhere is TERRIBLE, because, uhh, they might suffer at some point in their lives, and ANYWAY they're just going to get old and DIE eventually so CLEARLY IT'S KINDER TO JUST LET THE SPECIES DIE OUT, because you JUST CAN'T ENJOY CUTENESS if there is even a REMOTE chance that the animal displaying said cuteness might not LIVE FOREVER IN PERFECT HAPPINESS, so it's better if we just DON'T HAVE KITTIES.

(Disclaimer: I do actually totally understand the importance of spaying/neutering pet kitties, I just, er, like making fun of people who say excessively silly things.)
