Perfume can kill
In fatshionista, a community devoted to fat-positive fashion, rosewelsh makes a post (which was accidentally okayed by a mod) asking people to be careful with perfume and other scents because of those like her that are "deathly allergic" to scent.

Reactions are mixed - some people agree with her, some people think that she's overreacting, and quite a few question what it has to do with fat fashion. It quickly devolves into a discussion about whether or not multiple chemical sensitivity really exists, whether or not the community is a "safe space", and whether or not the responders are bitches.

There are also comments comparing perfume to second hand smoke and contrasting the community reaction to her post to one that an openly gay person would receive if they dared reveal themselves.

It ends(?) with a flounce.

Bonus points for grammar nazisnitpickers who oppress the learning disabled.

ETA: Bahleeted! My thanks to athy and julian_black for the save.

ETAA: Modhammer falls.

If anyone tells me scent-triggered allergies (or intolerance, or whatever) are imaginary when I ask them politely to eat their fresh-cut pineapple somewhere else, I'll be happy to pantomime handi-wipes when the smell causes me to projectile-vomit on their shoes.

Actually, my sister is VERY allergic to onions (as in hospital trips because she can't breath type allergic) and occasionally we'll drive by someplace thats frying 'em and she just starts swelling up and coughing and getting ready to heave. So, I understand and sympathise. :(

I'm telling my husband. He doesn't swell up, but he gets sick when he strongly smells onion or ingests it in chunks.

I think we narrowed down my issue to a particular protein produced by only the fruits to which I am allergic, and especially present in their nectar. It sucks because fresh pineapple and mango are two of life's greatest joys.

Tell him to carry some Benedryl with him. It does help curb the worst of those symptoms (though, I imagine you already know that.)

Ugh, being allergic to anything you eat is such a hassle. I'm allergic to shellfish (and shrimp) and my husbands family loves the stuff. I'm always the one eating salmon or steak when they go out. I can't even kiss my husband if he's eaten any of the stuff. :( I end up either puking or getting hives.

Thank you for that. My mom is allergic to shellfish like you are, but I never really understood what a pain in the ass it has to be for her whenever I get a craving for shrimp or something like that.

Oh, and the Benedryl is a good tip; I think I might tell her about that as long as it doesn't mess with her other medications. F_W is always so educational!

It really does. She can't hardly go out to eat anywhere, or buy a lot of different things because onions, onion powder or extract are used. Until recently, it'd probably been about 10 years since I'd last actually even eaten an onion. It's kinda funny what you get used to. Our whole family built our menue around her allergy so, most of us haven't touched onions in years.

Sounds like my family and peppermint. My brother was -highly- allergic, so we never ate it at my house. Which gets me odd looks now, as I don't like mint, and people are forever offering me chocolate mint something.

DDDD: What a horrid thing. Wow, that must truly suck for you.

Me, I'm just starting to discover this wild new world of allergic reaction to scent. I've been allergic to milk for a long time (please note that it's an actual allergy, not a lactose intolerance) but it's only recently that things like chocolate have begun to mess with me if I smell them, and I don't know how far it might go. *worried now*

Pineapple and mango are pretty singular allergies; as long as I read ingredients, I'm mostly okay. I try to avoid fancy seafood restaurants since I've had bad experiences with waiters not taking it seriously and just "picking it off." Which doesn't work because the juice is worse than the flesh, though once I gave in because mango is my favorite fruit and just sat there letting my mouth swell up because that little bit of mango flavor was so nice. And I'm never going to Hawaii, which is okay because I don't like the beach anyway.

Milk's in everything, which would suck. You can still have milk-free chocolate though, right?

You know, I didn't know they made milk free chocolate. I'll have to see. I do know that high quality, high cocoa percentage dark chocolate is not as much of a problem, since there's a minimum of milk in that.

The level of my allergic reaction isn't as sever as yours, generally. It's more on the level of getting hives from dust allergies (which I also have 8D; ) : It agravates my asthma and fucks up my immune system. It's not as big a problem now that I'm older and my lungs are big enough to compensate and my general health is better, but I spent a lot of time being very sick when I was a kid because of it, until they figured out what was wrong with me (Halloween sucked). These days, I'm just careful to make sure what I do intake is limited, and if I'm sick, I'm viciously strict. And I stay rediculously far away from anything involving goat milk, since I react even worse to that stuff.

So, yeah. I had an uneasy truce with my allergies for a few years. But recently, as I said, I'm starting to react to the smell of milk chocolate. Nothing too serious right now, thankfully, but I'm not sure exactly what I should do if it starts getting worse. I suppose go visit a doctor for proper testing again. . ? Probably a good idea, since my familly also has a hereditary allergy to lobster lurking in there.

I'm always pissed when people don't take allergies seriously, though, or try and correct people who have them. Never mind some of us have been hospitalized or died from it. We're just ~overacting~. I do have fond memories of a tiny Pizza Hut that went out of their way to have one person, and only one person, make my pizza, on a clean surface, after having washed their hands, to do their best to minimize the cheese contamination. And I have a friend who's viciously allergic to stawberries and chocolate, and an icecremem parlour opened up a brand new bucket of vanilla just for him and seperatly washed a spoon so he could have his icecream without fear. So, there are really nice sorts out there, too.

Yup! Look for anything marked as vegan. I had some vegan truffles once that were better than any other chocolate has a right to be - I think they may have been from Trader Joes? Someone brought them to a party.

Dagobah also has a lot of vegan chocolate products - everything I've tasted from them is heaven. Larabars are also vegan. I especially like their Chocolate Coconut flavor.

If you walk by me with a dab of Anna Sui? I smile and sniff. If you have doused yourself in half a litre of Curious by Britney Spears? Coughing attack complete with body spasms.

I had a conversation like this about tuna fish once. No allergies, just people disgusted by tuna fish smell. Someone spouted off about how the inconsiderate coworker brought a tuna salad in and she had to go to the bathroom and puke and oh god it was disgusting and it should be banned.

It actually turned into a pretty interesting conversation. Luckily, only lunch, not life, was on the line, so it didn't turn into wank.

Now, on topic: I love perfume. I have friends who are allergic. I do my very best not to let me scent-craze get the better of me, because as an asthmatic and the daughter of one, I know how scary it is to not be able to breathe suddenly.

From the perfume-sensitive among us, I say thanks. Most perfumes give me a headache very fast.

My rules of thumb: If I simply feel the absolute need to wear a scent, I apply at 15 minutes before I leave, two dabs maximum and, if it's a spray, I spritz a mist of it in the air and walk through it a couple times. That way, only I can smell it.

That ban should be federal law.
