My breaducation, let me show you it
Bread wank. I've never been so happy.

[info]bellasmommy posts some step-by-step photos on how to make baguettes. In her description, she mentions using a bit of sugar, as well as an egg wash. There is also a mention of using the microwave to proof the dough, and using scissors rather than a razor to score the loaves.

The finished loaves look lovely, and [info]bellasmommy says, "These loaves are awesome. The outside is lightly crusty, the inside is light and chewy and fluffy." Great, right?

Oh wait. According to [info]schlake, SHE'S DOING IT WRONG. The finished product is obviously not bread, but some demonspawn of yeast and flour.

(Now I want a macro of Senator Vreenak holding a baguette, hissing "It's a FAAAAAAAKE!") (Which, thanks to nam_jai, we now have!

PS. Bonus stock/broth wankery back in December, also courtesy of [info]schlake.

ETA: It's also in domestic_snark, stupid_free, and sf_drama.

Hops, malt, water, yeast.

As long as it results in booze, it's okay with me *betrays Bavaria and pets his Beck's*

God damn, we Germans dogpile a lot when it's about beer, eh?

It's in our blood.

When I and a few fellow students were in Finland on an internship, we couldn't stop missing German beer and giving our two cents on Finnish "beer".

Didn't stop us from drinking the Finnish one, either, but that's a topic best left untouched.

I, personally, took AGES to get into booze, period, and I still don't like either beer or wine*...

...doesn't stop me from being elitist about beer, though.

I'm not that much into beer, either, actually (the sound you just heard? all of my friends and relatives gasping in shock simultaneously), but I live in Munich and if I would only drink Tequila Sunrises and Strawberry Margaritas, I'd have to sell my body and probably body parts in order to survive :(

Sounds quite familiar. I live in Duesseldorf and when I first went out in Bochum I *severely* misjudged the amount of stuff I drank because I only paid attention to the full bill, not the individual drinks (also, I gulp cocktails like lemonade which is instant fail). Having a long string of alcoholics in my family and hence a liver of steel and concrete saved me from total humiliation, but I still felt kinda woozy.

That's one of the reasons why I prefer to drink at clubs where you just have to pay when you get your stuff; I can actually somewhat put a stop on my drinking by seeing how much (or little) money I have left.

I think we share a liver :D !
But once the booze is a free, it doesn't save me from embarassment anymore. Boo for free booze.

That wasn't even the problem! 20 Euros in Bochum buy you about 1.8 times (<-- bullshit statistic) as much booze as in D'dorf, so the amount of money I had left wouldn't have mattered in any case.

Also, the booze has a lot of... volume to spread about in, that helps, too, I suppose

Well, I rarely leave town*, so I can use that, at least. And when I was in Finland a month ago, prizes were almost the same, so that still worked for me :D

*Woe is me.

Also, ditto.

Well, NRW is kinda... dense, so skipping from town to town is fairly easy. Unfortunately that makes commuting a pain in the ass :(

I maintain that if I didn't like Beer in Germany, I'm just not gonna like it.

And I don't. :( I'm not a beer girl.

Though the first time I ever got drunk was on Tequila in Munich... :D

I believe you. I believe you because beer is gross. :D

I had a friend in Germany and I asked him once about beer. I almost died when he said "Eh, I've had American beer and I like it about as much. I'm not really into beer. I know I'm not supposed to say that but I don't see the big difference."

(I can line up Americans who would try to argue him into the ground, let alone Germans... So much for me making culturally-based assumptions though.)

There are a surprising amount of Germans who don't really care about beer all that much... especially the younger generation tends to go alcopop (i.e. cheap lemonade mixed with wodka, rum or similar) a lot.

I wouldn't know the difference between German and American beer if it slapped me in the face... but the thought of putting anything but the aforementioned substances into beer gives me hives.

Kind of like making love in a canoe?

I personally rather very much like unfiltered wheat beers, a la hefeweizen. Mmm.
