Misanthrope Overload?
Ah, Cute Overload. A site that posts pictures of cute animals, what could people possibly wank about there? As the wiki shows, plenty.

I think Meg, the blogger, loves poking the crazies. One of the most reliable sources of "commentroversy" has been her "Cats n Racks" series. Yesterday she posted a video of a cat kneading some boobies with the hopeful tag "Nancy, it's a good thing you brought this to our attention, we've been just starved for commentroversies." Sadly, the commenters behaved themselves and mostly filled the comments with anecdotes about cats kneading soft squishy objects such as nads, ouch.

Meg would not be denied her wank, though! Clearly she had to bring out something NEW, something GUARANTEED to send her readers into apoplexy.

So today she posts... A HUMAN BABY.

*ominous chord*

263 comments so far, including the following gems:
She almost made the worst mistake of her life: Good Gods I was about to send a link to cuteoverload to someone, thank goodness I checked in first. BABIES NEED NOT APPLY.

You don't understand what your blog is about Meg! I DO: human babies are not what cute overload is about!

Whereas animals are completely silent and made of plasticine: Ugh, what's with all this worshiping at the altar of the baby? Babies are not cute, they're noisy and leak fluids. Do not want!

Uhhhh...: When I look at human babies, I just imagine the adult they will grow into... but puppies and kitties, etc., are babies forever!

I also love this comment where someone ponders changing their dissertation.

And finally, some pwnage:
human babies are not cute. if this is to be a regular occurrence, everyone i know who goes to this site will stop, including myself.

[Well, I can already tell how much we'd miss you... - Ed.]

Pass the pa-sickies.

Edit: HT to [info]dragonfangirl. cf_hardcore cheers the brave commenters for speaking truth to power, or something. What's wrong with the word tummy? :(

Baby talk was verboten in my house. For words that were hard to pronounce i.e. "stomach" "popsicle" were shortened to "belly" or "pop", but never "tummy" or "pa-sicle". We learned to speak properly by having words repeated to us in their full form.

Dude, the kid is trying to says popsicle. He's 1! And I'm sure at the age of 15 months you said "Stomach" with prefect articulation. Hell, even linguistics understand that some baby talk is simply the easiest sounds that a kid can get Their mouth around at their age. I used to try to call my grandma's dog by name as a kid but it came out "woofus" and not "rufus" because Rs fucked me up and they aren't easy sounds.

Also belly? NOT A MORE RESPECTABLE SHORTENING FOR STOMACH OMG SHUT UP.

Not to mention the fact that the mother DID say the full from word to the baby.

Nonsense, stop trying to excuse the kids for their pathetic attempts at communication. When it comes to communication babies are inferior to animals, which... despite being unable can speak, can... figure out ways to communicate... through... body language and mime, I guess. Something like that. LOOK JUST ADMIT THAT BABIES SUCK OKAY!

My sister named her favorite stuffed pig T, because she wanted to name it P (as in pig) but couldn't pronounce it. Since this was a pig actually given to me to make me feel better about her being born, I'm not even sure how she could make the T sound, but hey.

No kidding. I've always found the words kids make up when trying to say the real ones to be hilarious! Near my house there's a theme park called Wonderland and when my brother was really little, he used to call it "la-la land" which my family found immense amusement from getting him to say it over and over.

I'm 22 and I still say "tummy" pretty exclusively when referring to my stomach in conversation.

Clearly, I've never learned to speak English properly, and should withdraw from my graduate program in shame.

Also, baby talk is actually a really important step in developing a child's language abilities. Sure, it's not the best way to learn pronunciation, but with exaggerated tone and little concern for "correctness," it really helps a child figure out the differences in intonation, rhythm, and stress of spoken language. And since it's often accompanied by exaggerated facial expressions, it helps babies start to figure out moving which parts of a face make smiles, frowns, etc.

Sorry for the unfunny.

To be honest, that kid didn't really tip the cuteness scale for me, but I also have 6 nieces and nephews under the age of 5, 4 of them under the age of 3. I'm burned out on cute baby talk. :P

I like kids, I'm just tired of being around them all the time.

And let's be honest here, I don't know which is worse: Brockie prancing around with a squirrel tail in her mouth (Word of advice: rodent dogs hate squirrels) and begging to play with her stuffed squirrel by shoving it into your leg repeatedly, or a family of toddlers asking you to play Spr-man, complete with web-slinging and a 4 year old who wants to hang out with you nonstop because you're the cool aunt.
