uniforms = fascism
There's wank in the Fark pool again.

The following article gets posted with a "Hero" tag:

Following the school district's implementation of a uniform policy, parents complained that they can't afford uniforms, principal fights back sending an email saying that they should think about their child's education [Article]

Comments start off agreeing with the principal (who is actually a board member), but TheCid is not amused.

TheCid | 2008-04-26 10:08:07 PM
What I want to know is, since when does the government have the power to tell people (regardless of age) what to wear?

How is this not a ridiculous overstepping of their constitutional bounds? How can anyone support this blatant authoritarianism??

the shaman takes a real shining to our boy, and the love affair begins:

TheCid | 2008-04-26 10:25:11 PM
Good to identify yet another person who's part of the problem with this nation. Farking authoritarian followers.

the shaman | 2008-04-26 10:27:48 PM
I've got you farkied as "stupid, paranoid, atheist asshole"

You are the problem.

...And ends:

TheCid | 2008-04-26 10:40:04 PM
You're a lunatic who believes in shamanism and supports tearing down the wall of separation between church and state. You're an deluded fool with no grip on reality.
The fact that you support the authoritarians here in no way surprises me.

Welcome to my ignore list, farktard.

real shaman | 2008-04-26 10:58:46 PM
woooooo!!!! I'm on a dumbass's ignore list.

The rest of the 561 comments (and counting!) result in a dog piling of TheCid, whose ignore list seems to be a desirable goal:

Arthur Jumbles | 2008-04-26 10:58:12 PM
Could you please put me on your ignore list too? Please. I'd put you on mine except I'm not afraid to listen to points of view that differ from my own and as such don't use one.

Some Bass Playing Guy | 2008-04-26 10:59:06 PM
One look at TheCid's picture in his profile tells me all I need to know about him. You know that one person in your circle of friends that nobody likes, but nobody can quite tell that person? That's TheCid. [Profile]

real shaman | 2008-04-26 11:02:03 PM
He looks like the punks whose lunch money ended up in my pocket.

jmmsmile | 2008-04-26 11:17:14 PM
Oooh oooooh! I wanna be on TheCid's ignore list! Pleeeease!!!

You little popcorn fart.

Communism is called:

KoalaFace | 2008-04-26 11:15:58 PM
you seem to be awfully overbearing about your precious crotch dropplings 'freedoms.' Face the facts- this world/country/state/education system is not about YOU. It is about what is the best for the WHOLE. What is best for the whole appears to be school uniforms, for the reasons previously stated.

Don't you think that if EVERYONE in this thread is disagreeing with you quite adimately, that maybe, just maybe, you could be wrong?

TheCid | 2008-04-26 11:18:36 PM
You posting on fark is not the best for the whole. Get back to work, comrade. This country is supposed to be about individual freedom.

Not that many people actually give a shiat about freedom anymore.

real shaman | 2008-04-26 11:24:33 PM
You know who else made lame jokes about communism?

farc | 2008-04-26 11:25:29 PM

real shaman | 2008-04-26 11:31:01 PM
I remember now where I argued with thecid before....

He was in total agreement with the requirement of mandatory service for high school students.

It was totally ok then for government officials to tell your kids what to do.

One last funny before it turns into a bullying discussion and repeats from those late to the party:

KoalaFace | 2008-04-26 11:48:25 PM
[TheCid: What happened to your mother was wrong. The school had no business ordering her to change her hairstyle, and the fact that you still support this uniform bullshiat even though you know that story just confirms my suspicions- you are an idiot.

What good is health without freedom?]

you're a grad student, aren't you?

Also, bonus John Stuart Mill discussion starting at 2008-04-26 11:59:50 PM

How do they manage to wank on and on about whether or not it's too authoritarian to make kids wear uniforms, but completely miss whether or not it's classist to say that people who can't afford uniforms don't care about their children's education? Fark, I'm surprised at you.

... Oh, wait, they did at 10:03:50 PM. Never mind!

You, "TheCid" are part of the problem with your "Constitutional" nonsense.

Lolololol.

This doesn't sound like a uniform so much as an albeit strict dress code. I mean "Navy blue or khaki pants, walking shorts, slacks, skirts, skorts, jumpers, or similar clothing made of twill, corduroy, or denim fabric" which means .... dark blue jeans? Come on now.

Mmm, standard attire wank. I got a not-insignificant amount of pleasure reading the enormous shit-storm of wank that erupted when the Nashville Metro Public School system decided to implement a "standard school attire" a couple of years ago. Everything from "Wearing navy polo shirts will crush my child's delicate soul!" to "Opposing uniform attire supports terrorism!" Ah, the memories...

The high school I graduated from years ago now has a dress code that includes a rule that students may not wear black. At all. No black dress pants, no black polo shirts. Apparently they're terrified of everyone turning goth.

*smacks gums* Wellll, when I was a wee y'ungin, (after we'd walked fifteen miles to school in the snow and rain) all girls had to wear dresses and skirts.

No kidding. When I started school girls were not allowed to wear pants or shorts to school. We had to wear dresses or skirts. The rules changed by the time I reached Jr. High.

IIRC boys had to wear pants.

Gotta start it while they're young. My elementary school had uniforms, and every other Friday was "free dress day." Thus, while we all looked perfectly navy and respectable most of the time (as respectable as children under ten can ever look), and every other Friday it was a school full of fairy princesses and, I shit you not, dinosaurs.

This is the way to do it, people!

Just for grins I looked at Walmart.com's prices for girls' uniform pieces. They range from $5.88 to $9.88 per piece. Going by that you could buy one outfit for around $15.00. I confess I don't really know where kids get non-uniform clothes these days, but most of the pre-teen and teen girls I know of (mostly through their parents) would die if their clothes came from WalMart, so I looked at Dillard's (that's kind of mid-range but okay, right?) and they have some really cute dresses, for around $30 - $45* and skirt and top combos in the same range. So the too expensive argument seems really stupid to me, especially since the article states very clearly that no child will be turned away for lack of a uniform and the school district will provide assistance to those who need it.

*To be completely fair to Dillard's, they also carry uniform items (mostly in the $12.99 to $19.99 range).

Sorry if that was too serious business!

I was completely unable to learn anything all throughout high school because our dress code was pretty much "don't have your ass hanging out of your pants". Trufax. :( People wore all kinds of crazy colors and fabrics and it dazzled my eyes and I couldn't remember anything and I went to raves and did pot instead of studying. If they had only been serious about education and made everybody wear the same color, I would not be now living in a van down by the river.

One thing I never totally understood -- living in the UK, it seems to be the norm to go through your whole school education bitching about having to wear a uniform, and then, the minute you leave school, start taking every opportunity to dress back up in it.

Me and my boss argue about uniforms all the time. She comes to work in a pantsuit, and I come to work in jeans and a t-shirt and we debate over who has the most reason to live.

I still don't get why jeans always end up getting forbidden though. Not in our arguments, she's just glad I don't dress like the girl employee anymore. I mean, in dress codes.

Feh. That's not a uniform, that's just restricted colors. At my grade school, we had to take a drive every August to the uniform maker, to get me fitted for an actual uniform - exactly the same shirt and jumper for every girl in the school. On the one hand, they were rather ugly (plain white shirt, Peter Pan collar, plain navy jumper, school patch on the shoulder), but on the other hand, my mother never had to deal with what I was going to wear to school. And there was no oneupmanship in clothes going on. So, despite the OMGMYFREEDUMZ!!! tantrums, there are real advantages to uniforms.

But I guess there's always somebody who's gotta get chesty even over being made to wear dark blue pants. Oh the humanity!!

From the actual article:

A little more than a week ago, the Osceola County School District decided to implement school uniforms. Since then, he says parents have complained saying they can’t afford the new clothing. He disagreed with parents and fired off an email to them saying:

"Everyone can afford Wal-Mart and if they cant they need to think about turning of their cable TV or stop buying alcohol or cigarettes and spend their money on their children."

Oof. I don't find that attitude "heroic", personally.

I don't get it, are these people in favour or against uniforms?
And since we're on the subject, I've always wished we had had uniforms at my school. It would have erased the difference between the kids who had fashionable clothes and those who hadn't.

Twelve years of Catholic school made me hate, loathe and despise uniforms.

In elementary school, we had to wear these fuggly blue plaid skirts, with suspenders (ghod forbid you wore them without suspenders), white Peter Pan-collar shirts and a little tie. At least the boys got away with dark trousers and their tie in that fuggly plaid.

In high school, it was a grey uniform skirt with matching blazer. In the snow, we were only allowed to wear neat, pressed dress slacks with the uniform skirt over it. Our "summer" uniforms looked like we were either candy stripers or waitresses at Denny's.

Then, of course, I got to uni and suddenly had to make up my own fashion choices.

Ya can't win.

My school only enforced uniforms/dress code when it came to sports.

The dude on the field hockey team looked really good in a kilt.

Why is it always khaki and navy? So ugly. So, so ugly. (I hate navy blue. It does not suit me at all.)

I secretly wanted to have a school uniform when I was in middle school, until I discovered that American schools, by and large, have hideous uniforms, and there was no chance of getting to wear anything nearly as cute as what was in all the manga I read.

As far as I remember, my high school's dress code banned certain colors, doo-rags and, for a little while, the Star of David and sport's team jerseys because of gang problems. Other than that, as long you couldn't see panties, bras, boxers, or briefs it wasn't much of an issue as to what you wore.

Wow, did no one at all like their elementary/high school uniforms?

I loved mine. It was comfy, spared me the trouble of having to think about what to wear everyday, and was probably the only school uniform in the country that could be said to be haute couture.
