I wish my (public) school had instituted uniforms, as then I wouldn't have to look back on my style choices in horror.

England and Japan are tied for cutest uniforms in my book.

	My boyfriend is permanently traumatised by his purple school uniform :) Mind you, Northern Ireland has some of the most startling school uniform colours I've ever encountered. But you have "dress codes", I'm still weirded out by the fact that I was supposed to look at how much fabric was covering my shoulders. Apparently shoulders are much more "distracting" than cleavage, who knew.

In Spain, the only (unwritten) rule is "being fully dressed." Basically, guys have to put a t-shirt on to come to class (taking them off in PE or during the breaks is usually ok), and swimming trunks can't pass as shorts (this was the only thing that caused trouble once in a while). Well, hats aren't allowed either, but because it's rude. I'm not entirely sure we could have gotten away with wearing slippers, but here nobody would wear that in public voluntarily anyway.

Yes and no, it depended on the school. Mine was pretty lax.

Here's their current one:

Students are not permitted to wear the following:
1. head coverings, head bands, or sunglasses
2. see-through garments, exposed midriffs, strapless tops, or spaghetti
straps
3. clothing that is intimidating or a disruption to class
4. clothing that reveals undergarments
5. any potentially dangerous items, such as necklaces, bracelets, rings, or items with sharp or protruding objects, exposed chains of any kind including but not limited to wallet chains
6. hairstyles or colors deemed excessive or distracting
7. articles of clothing which promote the use of any alcoholic beverages, drugs, or tobacco products
8. clothing which contains sexually suggestive language, pictures, inappropriate language, or gang related items

And honestly, they only enforced it if it was dangerous, gang-related, alcohol/drug/sex-related, or you'd pissed them off.

	The only time jewelry was banned was for concerts, and only if it was bright and flashy enough to distract/blind the conductor. I think I saw more jewelry being worn in high school than anywhere else. (Reply to this)(Parent)

And the bit about the guys taking off their shirts reminds me of the cross country vs. soccer kerfuffle. Us CC kids could take off our shirts any time (girls included - sports bras aren't terribly revealing) while the soccer team was absolutely under no circumstances allowed to remove theirs. It pissed them off mightily since we used to run laps around their field!

That's pretty much my old high school's official dress code, too.

"Students are expected to dress in a manner consistent with the academic and social goals of our school. Articles of clothing which are distracting or disruptive to the educational process, which violate common standards of decency and modesty, or which contain obscenities, fighting words, or references to gangs, drugs or alcohol are not acceptable. Extremely brief garments or see-through garments are not appropriate for school. Under garments must not be exposed. Any staff member who feels that a student's attire does not meet these standards may send the student to the Dean for a conference."

Strangely, while I remember more of a dress code for elementary school, I can't find the policy on their website.

As a kid, going to school with slippers was one of my most recurrent nightmares... probably because I was absent minded enough to let something like that happen and I knew I wouldn't live pass that. Imagine my shock when I went to an American high school and saw people wearing pink fluffy slippers and pajama pants. I even had a friend that would carry a pillow around all day if she had to stay after school for drama practice, thankfully she wore normal clothes... otherwise I don't know how she would have know she was in class, specially during first period, with people having breakfast and all that.

Yes, I still am slightly traumatized. That said, I don't think the slippers were due to laziness. I'm pretty sure they kept them in their lockers... because I refuse to think they wore them around in the snow.
