Internet Lawyers -- Not Just for Publishers Anymore
A Dartmouth professor has decided to sue her students (with some faculty thrown in) for discrimination. Supposedly, "discrimination" now entails students disagreeing with you. Who knew?

(If you don't want to wade through all that, there are also summaries at Gawker and IvyGate.)

While students can be obnoxious little shits, you shouldn't be in the professoriate unless you're both interested in and able to redirect their own arguments against them to illustrate points and get a lively discussion going, instead of getting butthurt when they're obstinate about things which challenge their worldviews.

You are being specifically accused of, but not limited to, harassment.

Well, that's good. I'm sure the students wouldn't want to be limited to harassment.

and still lacking a solid apprehension of the expository essay.

I was going to make fun of this, but it turns out that is a valid way to use that word. Although I think most students have a solid apprehension of the expository essay anyway. :P

This actually reminds me (well, the description does, I haven't read the wank itself) of a brouhaha that happened at my university in my junior year. A professor was coming to campus at night to speak at a race-issues forum. She came out afterwards to find her tires slashed, windows broken in, and the words "KIKE WHORE" spraypainted over the hood.

Next day was the only time the uni cancelled classes, for race issues awareness marches.

Course a couple months later it was revealed that the professor had staged the whole thing as a roundabout method of insurance fraud. Kind of flavored the whole thing with irony.

Then I remember Superbad and that Dartmouth is an American college, no relation to the sister city of Halifax.
It's very late. I need coffee.

From one of her e-mails: "I am a currently a Fellow at one of the most reputed research (emphasize research) institutions in the country and I am the product of the educational system of the finest research (emphasize research) academic institutions in the country. I am very confident in my ability to teach as well and know that I will perform well where I am right now"

So, she's at some university that's all about research and she used to go to a university that's all about research (rather than teaching), and she thinks she's a good teacher? BULLSHIT.

Dartmouth has always had the reputation of being extremely conservative and at times seemingly fostering bias and prejudice among its student body.

So while this particular woman may be batshit crazy, I wonder about the whole story behind this suit, what the students were saying and doing, in what context remarks were made, and, in short, the atmosphere that created this situation (though I've no doubt that the lecturer contributed).

I wonder, too, that every part of the evidence so far seems to come from Dartblog, which is of course coming out of The Dartmouth Review. This publication is *not* the college's standard campus newspaper (that's The Dartmouth, which I believe is one of the oldest student-run campus papers in the country). Rather, it's a highly conservative alternate paper -- so known as highly conservative on an already conservative campus. It is perhaps most famous for a horrible "practical joke" in which an issue ran with a passage from Mein Kampf in place of their standard motto. This was quite a while ago, to be sure (1990) but hey, turnover of attitudes and biases can take a while.

So yes, that this aca-scandal is coming out of Dartmouth, and the reporting from the Dartmouth Review -- I just wonder if there may be some basis to a few aspects of her case.

PV: ...One time Tom Cormen was sitting in the class, and she [a student] asked me, how many T’s are in Gattaca. This was the kind of question she was asking, “how many T’s are in Gattaca?,” and I was about to answer her and Tom Cormen pre-empted me, “two t’s.” I’ll leave you to interpret it.
TDR: No. No, I don’t understand that.
PV: I have to tell you: it means tenure track.
TDR: Oh, okay.
PV: Because I wasn’t tenured track.
TDR: Oh, okay, yes.
PV: They were trying to intimate that I wasn’t ready for tenure track.
TDR: Yes, okay, I didn’t realize that’s what that meant.
PV: I’m kind of making this leap because this is the kind of subversiveness that was going on in that environment. That [girl x] would ask how many t’s are in Gattaca and that Tom Cormen would respond, “two T’s” as if I had no grasp on tenure track. ..but with [girl x], something’s going on with her. I’m not a doctor, but she’s not all there.
