Jesus Christ, movie star
Cintra Wilson reports on the ‘grassroots’ marketing campaign for Mel Gibson’s new snuff film, Passion, and interviews a clergyman about the screening he attended:

Then the readers weigh in:

"Passion Prayer Walk: Carefully choose a neighborhood you believe God wants you to reach.

Why am I having Rev. Jim Jones flashes???? *sweatdrop*

With multiple prayer teams, walk every street and pray for every house, asking that God would reach each person with the message of the cross through exposure to The Passion of The Christ.

...

*locks all of her doors and makes sure her pets are inside to keep them away from teh scareh cultists Evangelists*

Oh, I'm getting a message all right. It came in the form of lighting striking the lead actor of this movie. It means god wants these morons to STFU already.

I need a "Stop being on my side!" icon.

TWICE.

Some people never learn...

Seriously. I'm getting this image of God throwing up His hands and going "What am I supposed to do to get through to this guy?"

Hm, new philosophical riddle: If God is almighty, can he make Mel Gibson get the point?

Jim Caviezel was only hit by lightning once - the assistant director (who was standing next to Caviezel when he was hit) has been hit twice by lightning.

Clearly, God was aiming for Mel.

Well, you know what they say: if at first you don't succeed...

Mel's team has invented a Brave New World of promotional advertising: Force-feed a star-power-fueled "Passion" to your friendly neighborhood pastor, then tap into the free labor of the faithful, zealot-y congregation! Way to recoup through Jesus!

Jesus saves? Looks like he sells too.

Oh geepers, the letters are to die for:

One guy smacks the Episcopalian clergy around: For bland, fatuous inanity, they are without equal.

... this discussion began with mockery, spent most of the time picking apart the movie and anyone whose faith may have resonated similarly....

They said the movie sucked, so OMG THAT MEANS THEY HATE CHRIST!!!1!!

I think this one breaks a jurisimprudence law:

As for Mel Gibson's movie, I haven't seen it and don't know if I will. But if Cintra Wilson and Rev. Stanger want to have a film that is totally in line with their own version of faith and religion, they should go spend their own $30 million.

I disagree strongly with "Reverend" Mark Stanger's views. Is he really a Christian? <-- AHA! The old quotation marks around the credentials trick. Very clever! [/Maxwell Smart]

All these attacks on this movie appear to be scare tactics to brand this movie as bigoted and brand people who see it as bigoted also, in an attempt to discourage people from seeing it.

Oh damn. I thought this reporter chick's friend wasn't impressed by the movie. I didn't know it was a HUGE POWERFUL CONSPIRACY.

What kills me is that the letters complain about my favorite thing about being Episcopalian.

The cocktail parties.

Obviously the letter was written by somebody who doesn't get invited to the good ones.

Amen to that. I am all about the Episcopal social scene.

Considering that the new U.S. News and World Report came in the mail, and the cover story is "The New Evangelicals," color me doubly scared.

I am rather dreading this film because 2 things will make me go see it: 1) the desire to know whereof I bitch, and 2) Monica Bellucci. I'm a huge fan. I think she would make a perfect Mary Magdalene...in just about any other film on the topic.

I'm also trying to picture the terminally arrogant, irreverent, and snarky Vincent Cassel (Monica's husband) interacting with all these loonies at the premieres. It's a funny image.

Fun. Who needs lions?

(The last one is probably my favorite. What, no bile for Maverick? Tsk.)
