Lunch box wank.
[info]dracunculus directed my attention to this prime wank. This woman posts to her blog about the fun she has packing Japanese-style bento lunches for her kid. The first few comments are people saying, How cute, how fun.

Then at comment #6, some troll named Sarah makes a nasty remark about how cutting your kid's sandwiches into animal shapes will make him a laughingstock and stunt his imagination. Other people tell her to shut up and let them enjoy themselves. She continues to cuss them out, meanwhile suggesting that they try Xanax to get rid of their rage.

Someone named Victoria made the most patient responses to Sarah's spleen, inspiring someone else to announce, "Victoria, I always thought that Lesbians were mean, vindictive bitches, and you proved that for me. Is it because about 95% of the country thinks your life style is sick and that is why you all are so defensive on other issues too." I wondered if maybe Victoria's website, linked on her comment, identified her as a Lesbian, so I followed the link and found no mention of homosexuality, but at least two mentions of her husband.

Sarah has informed the blogger that she ought to erase her blog and devote her time in future to pursuits meeting with Sarah's approval. After a bit more of other people telling her where she could go, she declared this evening:

"While I stand by my original statement that this is over the top, I think it is hilarious that other people cannot allow someone else to have a differing opinion. It has been highly amusing to watch some people freak out in several places; nobody started a petition to ban food cut-outs. An opinion differing from yours was expressed and some people can’t handle it. Public blogs are going to get some different points of view, but this blog owner allowed them to be expressed and debated, which is highly commendable. You handled this in a way that most people wouldn’t, and I am very impressed. It’s refreshing that the blog owner has enough self esteem not to be upset or hurt by a differing opinion. Wendy, go on with your bad self and those cut-outs. You rock."

She's standing up for her non-sandwich-cutting principles!

Bento wank. That's a new one.

Also, PSYCHOLOGY DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY. I fail to see how cutting them into cutesy little shapes will stunt their imagination any more than, say, Lucky Charms.

1. I bought my lunch every day of elementary school and thus find this whole debate somewhere between irrelevant and WUT.

2. Moms trolling each other about how to pack their kids' lunches is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen, and yet I'm still laughing.

3. Those lunches scare the living crap out of me if only because the level of cute is almost hazardously high.

That Is All

So loving your kids is bad for them? Is that the point?

I suppose that if you do love them then they will never develop their imaginiations, since they won't have to pretend that one day their real parents will come and rescue them from the cold strangers that are holding them prisoner. If you really care for your children, in fact, you should never make eye contact, touch them affectionately, or refer to them by name. Also, they should be fed only cheerios slipped under the door of the closet you keep them locked in when not in school. Rice Krispies would be too stimulating, and might make them unhealtfully clingy.

Wow. Clearly Sarah's mommy didn't love her enough to make happy sandwich shapes, so NO OTHER CHILD SHOULD EVER GET TO HAVE FUN LUNCHES EVAR.

My Mama made sandwich bunnies for me until she started having to leave for work at 6 AM, then I discovered that the talent clearly ran in the family, because my Papaw took over the "Sacred Honor of Bunny-Making" every morning after that.

An expectation of food being cut into heart and cat shapes will not only affect their schema, but will create a strong sense of entitlement that will be extremely difficult to undo.

What schema? Are they going to get to 6th grade and panic when they see square bread? If cutting kids' sandwiches creates an entitlement issue, I'd hate to see what, say, birthday parties might lead to.

Wow, that was a totally over-the-top response to a mom making cute food for her kid! The child is four; cute food is simply cute food. As for getting made fun of in school, well, doesn't every kid get made fun of? Either other kids will think the bento boxes are the neatest thing ever, but make fun of him for his shoelaces, or they'll make fun of his bento boxes and Mom will be stuck with supplying lunch money for the next ever. In any case, John Rosemond has a point about psychologizing childhood to the point that no activity can be undertaken for fear of permanently skewing your kid's head.

All I got out of this wank is that those lunches are adorably cute and I'm absolutely buying the supplies to make myself little bento lunches. The other teachers will all laugh at me but I DON'T CARE. I'm well-adjusted like that, purely because my mother didn't love me enough and made me buy the crappy school lunch every damn day. I'm clearly overcompensating now. The desire for little rolled-up lunchmeats is obviously penis envy, and the animal shapes represent my suppressed desire to bite off the head of my absent father. Who needs therapy when you can have bento?

...there. Did I do it right? Do I get my Internets!Psych Degree in the email in six weeks?

I'd like to think that this sums up my reactions here.

Sorry about that.

Dear god, what the hell? If I'd had lunches like that in preschool I'd have been the envy of all children.

Of course, now that I'm an adult and work full time... No. Some of my coworkers would still be envious if I brought lunches like that.

If the kid was a little older (and eating in a cafeteria with even older kids) I could see worrying about the reactions from classmates, but preschoolers can still appreciate a kitty-shaped sandwich, methinks.

Japanese-style bento lunches

I'm sorry but I can't figure out what a 'bento' is and why is it Japanese-style? I looked at the entry and I'm thinking that perhaps a bento is the plastic container holding the food? I never heard of this term.

As for the cute lunch choices, my students (kindergarten, 5-6-year olds) would totally love the variety and presentation. I can also say that they would not tease another student who came in with that style of a snack or lunch, at least not in my experience. I often praise the students who A) have their snack in a reusable container (eco-friendly ftw!) and B) bring in healthy snacks so I approve of this post. :p The only thing I see possibly presenting a problem, and the OP eventually noticed it too, is that in some cases, there were too many choices. Kids sometimes feel they need to eat all of it even if they are full or they don't have enough time to finish. [/my thoughts]

You know, when I read the quote about making the kid a laughing stock and whatnot, I kind of gave her the benefit of the doubt that maybe the kid was like... a teenager or something.

DUDE, A PRESCHOOL KID WITH ADORABLE LUNCHES WILL BE THE ENVY OF ALL OTHER WEE TOTS!

Now I want to make a bento lunch with kitty shaped sammiches and cheese with teddy bear cutouts.
