Hermit crabs, even more interesting when transparent.
Over on [info]wtf_nature on LJ, someone posts a picture of a hermit crab in a transparent shell. It's kind of cool and freaky all at once.

[info]electricube is bothered by this. Very bothered. Se proceeds to wank about animal rights, toxic poison, and what bettas really need for an environment. In great and astonishing length.

But wait, there's more! Bettas are awesome and you can teach them how to read. Watch as sarcasm completely escapes this girl, and then her boyfriend leaps in to defend her!

At least read that last link. It is fucking beautiful. Edit: There's a NSFW link in one of those threads I didn't follow to the end.

Thanks so much to the anonymouse over on [info]wank_report who tipped me off to all the crazy.

That's a neat shell. It might not last long as a house for the crab, but it's still a cool picture.

As for the shit storm. Wow. Just, wow.

Oh god, that last linked thread. It started out okay, if a bit weird. I thought [info]pig_catapult was being sarcastic or something about the betta reading. And then it went WHOOOOM! and the crazy came from all corners. I'm barely into it, and I'm cracking up laughing (and not just because I've Eddie Izzard on tv right now, thanks to BBC-America)

Are you saying this hermit crab is self-aware?

It must be the 4 hours of sleep I got last night, because I cannot stop giggling at that. All I can see now is a little hermit crab popping out of its shell with a little top hat on saying "y halo thar!" XD

Humans are not entitled to harm animals of other species in the pursuit of reducing harm to their own species. If we had a few more diseases culling out weak humans, perhaps we wouldn't be dealing with a staggering overpopulation crisis that will likely kill us one way or another.

I like this idea. In fact, I think we need to give electricube rabies and see how well this theory works. It's all in the name of science and culling out weak humans, after all!

I doubt you will grasp the concept, because you found it amusing when a human threatened to kill animals in an attempt to exert control over other humans (rather like a hostage situation).

"STOP SPREADING YOUR PETA-CRAZY ACROSS THIS BOARD OR THE HERMIT CRAB GETS IT!!!!" *places a tiny little gun to the hermit crab's head*

(Also, that plastic shell is AWESOME. I always wondered what they looked like inside! Now they just need a snail with a clear shell.)
