Hermit crabs, even more interesting when transparent.
Over on [info]wtf_nature on LJ, someone posts a picture of a hermit crab in a transparent shell. It's kind of cool and freaky all at once.

[info]electricube is bothered by this. Very bothered. Se proceeds to wank about animal rights, toxic poison, and what bettas really need for an environment. In great and astonishing length.

But wait, there's more! Bettas are awesome and you can teach them how to read. Watch as sarcasm completely escapes this girl, and then her boyfriend leaps in to defend her!

At least read that last link. It is fucking beautiful. Edit: There's a NSFW link in one of those threads I didn't follow to the end.

Thanks so much to the anonymouse over on [info]wank_report who tipped me off to all the crazy.

Well, how undignified for that poor crab. Kids these days have no respect for MYSTERY!

*covers it with a hankie*

Hermit crab wank! I'm so happy I could cry! Best pet ever, I don't care what anyone says! D:

Er ... I actually know what picture it is without even clicking. It popped up on a hermit crab forum last year and it was determined said crab was likely... well. An ex-crab. Pining for the fjords, etc...

So did they put it in there afterward, or...?

Aw, man.

...That does kind of make all this completely moot, though.

And thus extra amusing.

I dunno, I was in an animal behavior class once where we did an experiment with hermit crabs and shell preference. It's pretty easy to get crabs to change shells. You just put a couple of drops of uncomfortably warm water on the shell, and they scramble out. Then give them a selection of shells to choose from, and they will look over their options, pick one, and climb in. If the crab were driven out of its shell and its only option for a replacement was the glass/plastic one, it would probably climb right in on its own. (The crabs we experimented with were willing to take shells with great big holes in them if nothing else was available.)

Oh yeah, there's even videos on YouTube of a crab using a bottlecap as a shell (so pitiful looking). I don't think it was the type of shell that led to the 'it's dead' conclusion. It was awhile back but I think it was something about the position.

Ah, ok. Man, now I'm sad (and wondering how on earth they managed to get a dead crab into a spiraled shell).

There, there. Nothing's known for sure! Maybe it is alive and the folks at the forum were mistaken. Sadly nobody seems to know the original source of the photo. :/

Aw.... well, I do remember the wank over a photo of a cat being "experimented on" which was really a legitimate medical treatment of some kind, so... you never know.

It's possible that the shell is split in two pieces, and you put the dead crab in one half and then close the other half around it.

Insults like "idiotic" and "Dr Doolittle" would not be tolerated in a debate.

Now wait just a damn minute, I read that book and Dr. Doolittle is awesome.

Seriously (sort of) this cracked me up. I really needed the laughs, especially the reading fish. (WTF)

My cat stares at the bookcase sometimes. Clearly he's angry I won't get a book down and let him read it. Maybe he'd like a little Janet Evanovich now and then...

The solution to the problem used to be "don't kill the predators". If they are not extinct, the solution is to let the predators take hold again and to give the animals space to live undisturbed. link

People like this make my job utter hell at times. I lack the words to properly express how much they annoy me.

If there's one thing I don't like about where I live, it's the ridiculously large number of batshit morons that I have as neighbors.

Are we allowed to comment on the wank if it's to say something factual? Someone in the comments was talking about a milk machine that cows step on to when *they* want to be milked and how they heard it was in development, and I wanted to say that it's real and I've seen it. It uses lasers to position the milk sucker things. It's pretty cool, all in all. Saw it at the State Fair in the Dairy barns.

[I didn't comment to be on the safe side, just wondering...]
