Hermit crabs, even more interesting when transparent.
Over on wtf_nature on LJ, someone posts a picture of a hermit crab in a transparent shell. It's kind of cool and freaky all at once.

electricube is bothered by this. Very bothered. Se proceeds to wank about animal rights, toxic poison, and what bettas really need for an environment. In great and astonishing length.

But wait, there's more! Bettas are awesome and you can teach them how to read. Watch as sarcasm completely escapes this girl, and then her boyfriend leaps in to defend her!

At least read that last link. It is fucking beautiful. Edit: There's a NSFW link in one of those threads I didn't follow to the end.

Admittedly keeping bettas in bowls is not ideal, bettas in captivity are a long ways from the wild guys and tend to favor a little pampering. No way would a captive betta be able to survive in the wild, especially the males. Comparing domestic bettas to the wild types is a bit like comparing dogs to wolves, IMO.

But the primary reason I keep my guy in a filtered three gallon aquarium is because I'm lazy and don't want to do a thorough water change every 2-3 days. Filtration makes everything easier!
