Hermit crabs, even more interesting when transparent.
Over on [info]wtf_nature on LJ, someone posts a picture of a hermit crab in a transparent shell. It's kind of cool and freaky all at once.

[info]electricube is bothered by this. Very bothered. Se proceeds to wank about animal rights, toxic poison, and what bettas really need for an environment. In great and astonishing length.

But wait, there's more! Bettas are awesome and you can teach them how to read. Watch as sarcasm completely escapes this girl, and then her boyfriend leaps in to defend her!

At least read that last link. It is fucking beautiful. Edit: There's a NSFW link in one of those threads I didn't follow to the end.

Thanks so much to the anonymouse over on [info]wank_report who tipped me off to all the crazy.

My cat is self-taught.

Having other's teach you is for pansies.

Are you implying that I somehow do not care about my cat's education?

I assure you, nothing could be further from the truth!

No, I'm implying your cat is retarded if he needs you to educate him.

Mine is currently working on her PhD in kibble hunting -- and I never babied her with a single lesson.

Kibble hunting? KIBBLE HUNTING? Goodness. I might have to "baby" my cats, as you put it—but at least they're in a worth-while major.

It'll put food in her dish (or well on the floor near her dish), and that's the important thing. What are your cats going to do with calculus? Run NASA? Huh?

Get a paying job that doesn't involve hunting for a living like some redneck.

Can't even put food in her own dish, and yet you're proud of her? Your expectations must be quite low.

Nothing wrong with hunting. I tell you, she brings home enough pigeon for the entire family.

Besides, It's what proper cats do. You must be one of those liberals pushing those unnatural notions.

Just because I let my cats hunt in their free time versus FORCING them to provide for the family like some kind of sadist doesn't mean that my notions are "unnatural." If anything, you're stunting your cat's life by forcing her to grow up too fast!

Does your cat have no responsibility? You are raising that cat to be dependent.

I've raised my cats to be independent free thinkers who aren't responsible on me for a damn thing. They've learned to balance work and play time so as not to stress themselves and yet still bring home enough food to keep themselves fed, which clearly can't be said about your cat.

My cat loves her work. Her work makes her strong and proud. She finds meaning and excitement in hunting, and she's squirreling away some for later, usually under the coffee table. Your cat may be fine for now, but what happens when the kibble bag is empty and you can't get to the store until after work? What will she do then?

I work in the goddam pet store, so I suppose I BRING SOME HOME WITH ME.

Or better, I'm a responsible adult, I write down that I need it IN ADVANCE, and I make a point to bring it home with me BEFORE I RUN OUT.

How nice of your cat to have a sugar daddy.

Are you implying that I'm somehow supplying my cats with everything they need, without thinking of their self-sufficiency? Because I can assure you, nothing is further from the truth, and it cuts me to the core that you would say such a nasty thing.

It hurts because it's true. Admit it. You coddle your cats. Pet them even.

Of course I pet my cats, it's unnatural not to touch them!

You're abusing your cat and you don't even realise it. I bet you feed her out of a plastic bowl, too, you heartless bitch.

Unnatural! Do cats in nature get pet? That poor creature, being made to rely on someone else and endure touching. Touching all over. It makes me shudder to think.

A worth-while major? Like English?

Excuse me while I laugh.

English majors can hardly find their way out of the library, let alone do calculus. My cats are on the road to success in a major that's quite challenging, thankyouverymuch.
