Semper Fur
So, there's a country singer named Kelly Foxton who likes to dress up her pet squirrel in little outfits. Lots and lots of little outfits.

Now, Sugar Bush is no ordinary squirrel. She is a patriotic squirrel! Many of the pictures on the site are bizarrely militaristic, and frankly, just a liiiittle creepy. Here, for example, Sugar Bush inspects the gallows in preparation for Saddam Hussein's assassination.

The fun begins when the Sugar Bush Squirrel (TM!) page gets linked on Cute Overload.

There is plenty of the expected, "ZOMG, dressing up your squirrel is WRONG!" wank. However, the wank truly becomes golden when people begin hotly debating Sugar Bush's politics. Jamie kicks it off by remarking that the site is "Cute. But far too right wing." Several others chime in to agree with Jamie, but Squirrel lover is incensed:

Not to add into the commentroversy... but "too right wing"???

So, no one can have an opinion or outlook that may be different from yours?

And people wonder why I don't respect so-called "liberals"

Loretta wants to know why Ms. Foxton is spending all of her time making squirrel outfits when she could be contributing to the betterment of the world!

pandasocks quotes a passage from Sugar Bush's website that is worth the price of admission all by itself:

"Sugar Bush has even attracted the attention of the enemy. 'I get e-mails from Arabs — I even sent one of them to the CIA,' Foxton says. 'I think for a while they've been intercepting my e-mails anyway.' According to Foxton, this particular correspondent claimed to know the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, but the CIA wasn't interested in following up the tip.

"'They should check every lead — don't fluff us off,' Foxton says. 'This guy has information about Osama, and he's willing to tell Sugar Bush.'

turkey bear is offended by the image of the squirrel as a Catholic priest!

fifi sums up the whole bizarre situation best:

the thing about the politics is...
really, what political message is sent by dressing up your squirrel in military garb?

It borders on the parodic, or the surreal.
Too aesthetically bizarre to be deemed mere partisanship--regardless of the conscious intentions of the artist.

It's a rodent-folk-art version of Cindy Sherman!

"'They should check every lead — don't fluff us off,' Foxton says. 'This guy has information about Osama, and he's willing to tell Sugar Bush.'

This just cracked my ass up. I imagined a suspenseful scene in some action movie where the terrorist demand to meet with the best negotiator in the U.S., Sugar Bush the Squirrel: Model by day, secret agent by night.

Okay, when you're dressing up your squirrel in cute little outfits and take pictures, you definitely have too much time on your hands.

Especially when you also make the cute little outfits yourself.

On the one hand, that's kind've awesome. On the other, what the hell.
Emphasis mine:
Sugar Bush loves to dress up, and has over 2,000 outfits with matching hats and accessories. Sugar Bush Squirrel has her own, posh studio with an elaborate stage and thousands of stage props, and has posed for over 5,000 photos since her modeling career began.
The mind boggles.

Keep watching and you will find her on everything from glossy photos, greeting cards, calendars, children's books, paper dolls, a stuffed animal with an elaborate wardrobe, coffee table books, coloring books, MySpace, thousands of blogs, advertisements, billboards, buses, magazines, newspapers, webnews & TV shows to military photos for our troops!
I'm clinging to the hope this is all to make money, and not a desperate bid for attention.

I am impressed by her set ups, though. 1) That's a lot of props and 2) how does she get the squirrel to hold those positions? I hope the squirrel is happy.

This makes me think of fluffers. This is not a good thing to think of when squirrels are in the picture. I am not happy with my brain.

Sweet Zombie Christ that's got to be one of the ugliest websites I've seen since 1995. Except for the squirrel pics, there's nothing worth looking at. Boxes, bad text colors... just about every design sin ever.

Good thing squirrels are cute enough to make up for an awful web design.
