Best Letter Ever
Over on the blog That Canadian Girl, a post appears about a friend of the blogger who recently drained a pond behind his new house and found a very odd letter. Many commenters find the humor in this, but then of course, there are those who find something to argue about. You'll find cries of "omg you destroyed the pond" and "shut up, it was for the children!" And of course, "your spelling sux!" Enjoy!

The grammar nazi bitching about whinging versus whining is hilarious. I especially love when he gives the blog owner permission to utilize whatever word he/she/it would like. So kind of him.

I was JUST coming over here to comment on that. It's always nice to receive permission from absolute strangers to write in your own dialect. With that whole No Consonant Left Behind initiative - you know, the one about standardizing internet spelling and grammar into LOLcat - it gives me a great feeling to know people like Grammar Nazi will help preserve the rich heritage of the One True Way to form words.

I think that's my favorite comment.

"I'd appreciate it if you spelled it the way I prefer but I suppose you can go ahead and do it your way on your site."

Only much much much longer!

Bwah? I can understand the surprise if it's the first time you've ever seen it spelled with more than one g (I still mentally pronounce it as ryhming with the word binging when I read it, and then take a second to wonder what a whinge is untill I rememeber it's whining) but come on, explaining how words are sometimes spelled differently in different places is pretty OT. Especially when there's all sorts of letter sillyness to comment on.

...does kinda make me want to find and use every non-canadian variation on a words spelling I can if I ever talk to this person online tho.

Except that the grammar nazi is wrong - 'whinge' isn't a variant spelling of 'whine', it's a different word. Australians use both, with slightly different connotations. (When I was kid dogs whined and children whinged, unless the children were actually using a whiny tone. "But muuuuuuuuum" = whine. "BUT YOU SAID WE COULD GET ICECREAM DAD ALWAYS GETS ME ICECREAM I HATE YOU!"=whinge.)

I still mentally pronounce it as ryhming with the word binging when I read it

Just remember, it rhymes with minge. ;)

Ooh, and other people pointed it out too. Tasty linguistic wanking.

Um…Spelling Nazi - I think you’ll find that ‘whining’ is how you spell ‘whining’, and ‘whinging’ is how you spell ‘whinging’. In much the same way as ‘bus’ is spelled differently to, say ‘onomatopoeia’, what with them being completely different words and all…

But wait! The debate can't end there.

Whinging is whining… just spelled differently. I don’t see how this is such a hard concept to grasp?
Personally I think “whinging” would be pronounced like “winging”, but that’s just me.

You would think, yet apparently not.

It means whining. Whinging, whining, same difference. And you’re silly.

Uh, what? Also that is a beautiful concluding argument.

Whinging… a new word to me… I doubt I’ll be using it though. It sets off my spell check, which really annoys me.

Fancy the annoyance of having your spell check give you squiggly red lines for correct non-US English! My heart bleeds.

People who can't stand having anything picked up by spell check must have some very limited, boring comments, or maybe that's just me and my wacky non-US English. I guess I'm just used to it hating on at least one or two words most times I post.

But the words it suggests as replacements can be so hilarious. Firefox thinks I probably meant to call someone a 'leasehold' rather than an 'arsehole'. (It would also prefer to be called 'Firebox'.)

I love spellcheck. Ever since I copied an oft-disappearing fanfic into a word document. I ran the spellcheck to catch any typos, and in the process, managed to change every instance of the name "Esiban" to "Lesbian". (Firefox would prefer Esiban to be called "Citibank", and wants to change "fanfic" into "Stanfield".)
