Boing?
I don't think I've ever seen BoingBoing wank here - is there a reason for that or just that nobody thinks to look there? The place explodes at least once a fortnight, and an experienced wanka can pick where the good stuff is gonna hit. The lastest 'splodey on the forum follows one of Cory Doctorow's posts - Hot day fun for kids - paint the house with water!

You can probably see where this is going: the "Don't you know there's a drought on?" folks are slugging it out with the "let the kids have their fun" folks, so there's fun for all.

Just a tip - for those who don't regularly frequent BoingBoing, it's a moderated forum - if someone has pissed a mod off you'll see their post come up "disemvowelled" - you can usually make out what is being said if you want to hard enough.

I couldn't find any tags that said "conservation" or "environmentalism", so I've left them off - sorry!

Reminds me of this IRL wank I got to listen to at the zoo. You know many zoo exhibits these days use ponds instead of dry moats as a barrier to keep their animals in the exhibits? They look natural, provide habitats for wild animals, etc. Apparently that does not mitigate the fact that water evaporates off them. (to clarify, I live in Portland, Oregon. A 'water shortage' around here means the grass might get a bit yellow in the summer)

Wait, I thought a water shortage here was two consecutive days of sun.

I thought that was Seattle? Round here it's a whole three days.

I was in Portland in May! You guys have FOUR-HEADED Drinking Fountains! They were like the Hydras of Fountains!

I kept taking pics with my cell phone. I'm from a drought state...

Those are known as the Benson Bubblers. Back in Ye Olde Days Mr. Benson was tired of loggers going straight to the saloons after work and drinking their paycheck away because they were thirsty, so he paid to have 20 of those put in. The city thought it was a good idea, so it put in another 40 or so.

They've been modified so that when we do actually have a drought (hey, anything's possible!) the city can stop the constant flow and put a drinking fountain faucet on one of the bubblers. There's also a timer on them so they don't run at night, and a few other modifications that reduce the amount of water running through them. More information here.

At one point I tried to count the number of ornamental fountains within any given square mile in my city. I lost count.

(Toyama, Japan; a west-coast maritime climate which is remarkably like Seattle, only snowier.)

God, I miss Portland. It's because of spending summers there with my dad and step-mom that Virginia summers are nigh-lethal for me without popsicles, iced mint tea and central air conditioning. God help me if I move further south.

Also, Portland Zoo kicks ass. I miss the elephants and the tigers.

Not matter how long I'm on the internet it always seems to surprise me when I see someone so close. I'm in Sweet Home. :)

Meh. What most sane people (not including current students and/or HP fans) realize is that 20 years later, that sort of thing becomes incredibly trivial.

Unless it's a family matter, where the superiority of one school versus another is the topic of conversation at every single family gathering. We're entering the fourth generation of an even Ducks/Beavers split.

Of course, we're weird like that.

I am also in Eugene (well, in the sticks east of Springfield). I must chime in and say that it gets reaaaally tiresome every year when we get our first week of sun (glorious sun!) that we're going to have a drought. When the river is at full height because of the snowmelt. I actually think that this year (what with all the cold rain in May) was the first year I didn't hear doomsayers decrying that Fern Ridge was going to dry up.
