Coffeewank!
This is an example of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that can ensue when you take coffee too seriously. Or, depending on which side you take, what happens when you don't take it seriously enough.

Jeff Simmermon of the And I Am Not Lying blog wanted an iced triple espresso from Murky Coffee in DC. He's informed that it's against Murky's policy to serve iced espresso, and when he orders the espresso and a cup of ice, he's told that "What you’re about to do … that’s really, really Not Okay." Simmermon takes exception to the barista's attitude, posts about it on his blog, and also shows the tip he left at Murky. The comments explode, some taking sides with Simmermon, others with the barista; the blog post ends up  linked on BoingBoing; and the owner of Murky responds with a highly unambiguous "Fuck you, Jeff Simmermon".

Insert joke here about everyone needing to lay off the caffeine.

I haven't the heart to look - is there wank over the spelling of espresso? Cuz, you know, there's ALWAYS SPELLING WANK!

And look! Salt shakers!

I loved the story about free salt shakers. And now I must have iced coffee.

Espresso spelling wank is almost fish-inna-barrel, I'm guessing. I haven't dared venture into the darker reaches of the coffee fora; these people get intense, even when they're not being wanky.

That salt-shaker story is great.

I'm just remembered of the classiest restaurant I ever ate it.

/cue pretentious music

Oh, it was lovely, right below the castle in Edinburgh on the Old Mile. I think it's the Witchery.

I walked into this place and felt instantly intimidated because OMG! It's older than my country and has a wine list longer than a phone book and the menus were in calligraphy and came rolled up with ribbons and the crystal sang and blah, you know?

And yet, the staff there were such that I truly felt that we could have walked in wearing shorts and ripped t-shirts and they woudln't have batted an eye or reacted, just lead us to our table and brought the best wine.

mmmmmm.....

Sadly, I cannot remember if the food was any good. *laugh*

I find the lower one is on the totem pole, the more likely one is to get very very uptight about things.

That's awesome. And if I'm ever in Edinburgh, I may have to find this place...

If you were at the Witchery, then yes, the food was very good, at least to my non-gourmet tongue. I was there about a year ago, and it was fabulous.

Also, I figured I had to have Scotch at the end of the meal, but know nothing about Scotch, and the server gave me samples of several different ones. Mmmm, Macallan.

I often find that to be true - the "fancier" the restaurant, the more polite the staff. I've seen my husband seriously flub it at times and no one bats an eye. Right down to the coat check people, everyone just wants you to feel welcome.
