Coffeewank!
This is an example of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that can ensue when you take coffee too seriously. Or, depending on which side you take, what happens when you don't take it seriously enough.

Jeff Simmermon of the And I Am Not Lying blog wanted an iced triple espresso from Murky Coffee in DC. He's informed that it's against Murky's policy to serve iced espresso, and when he orders the espresso and a cup of ice, he's told that "What you’re about to do … that’s really, really Not Okay." Simmermon takes exception to the barista's attitude, posts about it on his blog, and also shows the tip he left at Murky. The comments explode, some taking sides with Simmermon, others with the barista; the blog post ends up  linked on BoingBoing; and the owner of Murky responds with a highly unambiguous "Fuck you, Jeff Simmermon".

Insert joke here about everyone needing to lay off the caffeine.

Reminds me of that one time my roommate wanted to eat plain white rice with soy sauce. Just soy sauce. My Indian soul was appalled, but I didn’t passive aggressively bitch online OMG UR DOIN IT WRONG. ;)

I, uh, have been known to do exactly that. >_> (Something to do with my own childhood attempts to de-bland Minute Rice and Uncle Ben's with something, anything. And somehow that ended up getting wired to the comfort-food circuits in my brain.) Although lately I've switched over to the Japanese way of tossing in an ume plum or two instead.

Um, I really like doing that. *shifty eyes*

How would your Indian soul do it, actually? I'm always up for new ways to eat rice!

If the rice not part of a dish (95% of the time it is) my Indian soul has traditionally been eating it mixed with:

A) a touch of clarified butter, or more likely...
B) yogurt and a dash of salt. Add some spicy pickled mango in there and it's a delicacy!

I've been known to do that. I've also been known to take plain rice and throw in a bunch of salsa.

It's good.

I've actually made cheese sauce (ala mac 'n cheese) and then discovered that I had no pasta and so used it on rice.

Verily, it is just as tasty.

If I'm going with rice on its own, I go with rice, soy sauce, and wasabi. Then I mush them together until I have this satly-burny-carby pile of snack. Is that, er, just as bad?

But I think I can manage not to rant about it on the internet.

Rice has always been one of those foods that my husband and I could never agree on. In his family, they treat it like you do, like oatmeal. In my family, rice is used just like noodles or spaghetti. It's something to pour a sauce over.

oh, i'm on a doctor-ordered diet now of white things - bread, rice, pasta. (it'd be an atkins person's nightmare)

I'm SO SICK of it that I'm trying any way to put some flavor in.

Soy? Hell YEAH.

Plain white rice with shouyu (or with a little katsubushi, which is pretty tasteless) is pretty common where I'm from.

Then again, so is a meal with some kind of meat thing, rice, macaroni salad and biscuits. We're carb happy.

But it's so good! I used to buy that as a snack all the time when I worked at the mall because it was like a dollar. However, if I never see someone eat a mustard or ketchup sandwich again, I will be very happy. Blech!

I recently learned how to make onigiri (it's shockingly simple, short grained freshly cooked rice, packed into a ball with your hands. add stuffings or toast in frying pan with oil as desired. Wrap in saran wrap and freeze for long-term storage, defrost in microwave).

My favorite sauce for them? You guessed it, soy.

Mmmmm, soy.

White rice with just soy sauce? Ugh. No. My Chinese soul is appalled! :)

If I'm going to have plain rice with one other thing something else, then it's damn well going to be shrimp floss! Or salt fish. Or black-bean fish. Or pickled vegies.
