Coffeewank!
This is an example of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that can ensue when you take coffee too seriously. Or, depending on which side you take, what happens when you don't take it seriously enough.

Jeff Simmermon of the And I Am Not Lying blog wanted an iced triple espresso from Murky Coffee in DC. He's informed that it's against Murky's policy to serve iced espresso, and when he orders the espresso and a cup of ice, he's told that "What you’re about to do … that’s really, really Not Okay." Simmermon takes exception to the barista's attitude, posts about it on his blog, and also shows the tip he left at Murky. The comments explode, some taking sides with Simmermon, others with the barista; the blog post ends up  linked on BoingBoing; and the owner of Murky responds with a highly unambiguous "Fuck you, Jeff Simmermon".

Insert joke here about everyone needing to lay off the caffeine.

I think Coke Zero is meant to taste more like regular Coke than Diet... not 100% sure, though.

Coke Zero is sugarfree coke for REAL MEN because REAL MEN do not touch anything that has the word 'diet' in it. Things with the word 'diet' in their name are for pussies and women.

...or, at least that's the message I've got from the Coke Zero ads.

I'm trying to dechipher what's going on in your icon. It looks to me like a mermaid tail with a dry rash slapping an oddly shaped journal with a scaleprint design.

Coke zero is based on regular Coke formula, Diet is still based on the failed New Coke.

Loosely based, maybe, because the amount of sweetener used makes a big difference. I'm old enough to remember New Coke, and believe me, the current Diet Coke is ambrosia compared to it. New Coke was trying to out-sweet Pepsi, and was undrinkable.

We used to joke that the difference was that Coke Zero comes in a very MANLY black jacket, and doesn't have the word "diet" associated with it, so boys will drink it.

I've looked into it a few times, though, and while I haven't really researched it myself, I've seen assertions that both Diet Coke and Coke Zero use aspartame as an artificial sweetener, but in different amounts; Coke Zero may add something else, too; and Diet Coke may still be based on the "New Coke" formula from 1985, while Coke Zero is based on the "Classic Coke" formula that they brought back when "New Coke" bombed (so today's Coca-Cola is "Classic Coke"; after a while they were able to drop the "Classic" and pretend "New Coke" never happened). But I don't know how true some of those assertions are.

When they introduced New Coke, my mother in law and her best friend apparently stockpiled a massive amount of classic Coke so they wouldn't have to drink that stuff.

They taste the same to me, but Coke Zero gives me the shits.

I'm sure that was information you really wanted to know, but it's the only appreciable difference I've been able to find.

It's the sweetener. Most of these new sugarfree sweeteners have a laxative effect, which I learned when I couldn't have sugar and made the mistake of pigging out on sugarfree candy.

OH YEAH. I've found Splenda to be the worst. If it's in a drink, I'll get the shits about 20 minutes after I've had it. And the worst part is, they've put so much marketing out there saying that it's harmless because "it's made from sugar" that people don't think they need to warn me before I eat their desserts made with it.

However, they never forget a second time, after I've done unspeakable things to their bathroom.

I thought they use different sugar surrogates, i.e. Aspartam for Diet Coke and Sucralose for Coke Zero. Still tastes the same IMHO.

Or maybe that's just the Coke for the German market, where the normal Coke also contains different sugar (beet sugar) than in the U.S. (cane sugar).

Oh, that might explain why German Coke Zero tastes like Satan's foul toothpaste water. I've only ever had Coke Zero there.

Coke in the US doesn't contain ANY sugar. It's all high-fructose corn syrup. Which is disgusting but unavoidable because pretty much everything is sweetened with it.

I looked at the bottles once just to see if there was any difference. I think Diet Coke had a higher level of sodium or something.
