Coffeewank!
This is an example of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that can ensue when you take coffee too seriously. Or, depending on which side you take, what happens when you don't take it seriously enough.

Jeff Simmermon of the And I Am Not Lying blog wanted an iced triple espresso from Murky Coffee in DC. He's informed that it's against Murky's policy to serve iced espresso, and when he orders the espresso and a cup of ice, he's told that "What you’re about to do … that’s really, really Not Okay." Simmermon takes exception to the barista's attitude, posts about it on his blog, and also shows the tip he left at Murky. The comments explode, some taking sides with Simmermon, others with the barista; the blog post ends up  linked on BoingBoing; and the owner of Murky responds with a highly unambiguous "Fuck you, Jeff Simmermon".

Insert joke here about everyone needing to lay off the caffeine.

Totally.

I've worked for restaurants where people ordered horrible things. (Like a woman who used to order a side of hot fudge to dip her burger and fries in, or the people who would order steak and then smother it in ketchup, butter, and mayo.) We always just nodded and got it for them. Because it doesn't matter, it's what they want and they are paying for it.

I can understand health issues (No, you can't have your burger done rarer than rare) I can understand saying something, (Have you ever had an iced expresso before? Quite often people tell us it tastes funny. Can we suggest this instead? No? Okay, well, just know if you don't like it, we won't refund your money.)

But to flat out refuse a customer for no other reasons than "We don't like to do that?" Wrong.

Heh. My parents used to go to a restaurant where the owner would not only refuse to serve well-done steak, but would actually tell diners who asked for one to get out of the place.

I make people disgusting drinks all the time.

I don't make them iced espresso because people think that ordering an iced espresso and then filling it up with the milk we have sitting out for people who order drip coffee is a great way to avoid paying the full price of an iced latte.

Exactly. I absolutely believe the owner when he says that the policy was implemented to stop people "playing the system" STEALING from the store like this, and I think it's sad, but not really surprising, that such measures are necessary (the references that came up on google seem to indicate it's a distressingly common practice). Oh, but when you're ripping off Starbucks, then it's okay...

(I don't even drink coffee, what the hell.)

I suppose serving iced espresso at the same price as an iced latte would only lead to bad will from the high price?

I wonder the exact same thing. In most restaurants I go to, iced coffee costs .50 to 1.00 more than hot coffee. Because people add more sugar and cream to it than hot coffee.

I'm kinda boggled that coffee stores can get away with this attitude. Especially considering the high profit margin in coffee. So, you have people who try to play the system. Boo hoo. Tell me a restaurant that doesn't have people play the system every day starting with "Water with extra lemon please!" down to people who order coffee for their kids, then add 10 creams, because the kid really wants coffee milk, but that's too expensive.

I can't say all the time, given that I do not work in a coffee shop, but I recently learned what a "graveyard" is in terms of fountain drinks.

...

But I wasn't all that surprised, and kinda-sorta tried it myself. It tasted better than most of the drinks did on their own.

Oh yeah! Suicides are fabulous. And they really do taste better than the individual drinks they're made from.

Just a bit of each fountain drink, in equal portions. At my theater, Coke, Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Pibb Xtra, Fanta Orange, Barq's, Hi-C Pink Lemonade, Hi-C Fruit Punch, and seltzer water.

Oooh, I liked doing that as a kid. Coke and lemonade is actually kinda nice.

My friends and I also partook in The Mystery Drink and dared others to try it.

We tend not to think of cola as anything but "cola-flavored", but lemon is actually a big part of it.

There's a German soft drink I quite liked called Spezi, which as best as I could tell was a commercially available blend of cola and lemonade (the clear, fizzy, European kind). I got to be very fond of it during the month I spent there.

I recently had to make my first suicide/graveyard at the theater I work in (popcorn slaves represent =p).

The woman was very specific about what the proportions should be, though: 1/4 pepsi, 1/4 root beer, and 1/2 orange slice. She made me pour it out. Twice.

o_O Wow. I've never had anyone be that picky. Well, not about their drink, anyway... although I do like when they decide after it's been filled that they want to change the size/drink.
