Got lactose intolerance?
The rss feed for Overheard In NYC usually has a fair amount of discussion. A recent OINYC about butter and lactose intolerance caused a little cramping and bloating.

I wondered if [info]nadsatshoot is a troll. User info and single post say journal is for communities only and it is not linked to another LJ.

Dude, seriously. I can eat butter if it's made with small amounts of buttermilk, but if it has whey or casein in it, no f'ing way. (No f'ing whey?)

My stomach stages a coup at the first hint of whey.

It's funny that in a conversation about lactose intolerance, the wanker is the only one full of shit.

...okay, that was bad.

Wait, is he saying butter has the same negligible amount of lactose as cheese, which is why lactose-intolerant people can eat butter...and by extension cheese?

Because...I don't really know any lactose-intolerant people that can eat cheese.

I can eat cream cheese, small amounts of cheddar and Monterey Jack, camembert and brie, but not parmesan or Roquefort.

I can also eat butter if there's no whey or casein.

The only cheese I can't eat are the soft, fatty cheeses like ricotta. Hard cheeses are okay. (But I also have a million allergies/intolerances, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my lactose intolerance. /TMI)

This is only nominally on topic, but when I was younger I was very sensitive to dairy, and this was one of the most common conversations I had. The overheard quote reminded me of it.

Me: Does this have dairy in it?

Host/waiter/food service worker: Yes.

Me: What sort of dairy?

Host: Eggs.

But it's from the "dairy" section of the supermarket! (I have heard this. I'm not lactose-intolerant, but my SO is, and I was talking to someone about lactose intolerance and how remarkably decent Breyers' lactose-free vanilla ice cream is... and it came up.)

By this person's logic, other things that are dairy are: pre-made Jello gelatin cups, orange juice, bagels, "natural" peanut butter, shredded potatoes, and cans of whack-a-biscuit dough. They're all in the same aisle in my supermarket, and some are closer to the milk than the eggs are.

That's an interesting topic to troll about. And by interesting, I mean surprisingly dull.

But on the trolled side,
Depends on how serious the lactose intolerance is; it's an allergy just like anything else.
makes my little biology nerd headdesk, because lactose intolerance != milk allergy.

Also, now I want cookies with a glass of milk. *hearts lactase persistence*

Is he wrong? I know nothing about lactose intolerance so I looked some stuff up online. This site says that the lactose intolerant usually can consume 7 g of lactose without a reaction, and also that butter has only trace amounts and can usually be consumed. This site and this site seem to agree.

I'm not saying s/he's right, and s/he was spectacularly wanky about explaining their point. I'm just saying that a couple minutes skimming Google results for webpages that looked moderately informative seem, on the surface, to support [info]nadsatshoot.

Eh, my dad gets a reaction from eating butter, but he's so spectacularly lactose-intolerant that not even the pills help him much. So since s/h/it's being absolute about it and going "No no one can", yes s/h/it is. Any time you're talking about absolutes and usually in the same sentence, you're usually wrong.

I think it really is a matter of ignoring the 'usually' and 'most' that made people go WTF, troll.

I mean, this is a bit thoughts on yaoi here, but I can't eat any real butter without getting sick, though I can drink up to 2% milk (not too much, though. and skim is always okay). And then there are people who can eat it just fine.

We were told by the doc who gave the dx of lactose intolerance for chibi-kun that he could have a max of a pint of dairy products (or the equivalent thereof) per day, but of course, kids being kids, he ignores that and suffers as a result. (so do I but I theoretically know what I'm doing and why and what will happen and accept the consequences....theoretically) Hubby is stupid (imho) and chooses to ignore it completely and then whines when chibi-kun has an episode of screaming cuz his stomach hurts or he has constipation really badly as a result... *sighs*

For me, I can't have even that much before I end up in pain...

I think it's a matter of personal difference, so anyone making sweeping generalisations like that is just plain stupid and wrong...
