Got lactose intolerance?
The rss feed for Overheard In NYC usually has a fair amount of discussion. A recent OINYC about butter and lactose intolerance caused a little cramping and bloating.

I wondered if [info]nadsatshoot is a troll. User info and single post say journal is for communities only and it is not linked to another LJ.

This is only nominally on topic, but when I was younger I was very sensitive to dairy, and this was one of the most common conversations I had. The overheard quote reminded me of it.

Me: Does this have dairy in it?

Host/waiter/food service worker: Yes.

Me: What sort of dairy?

Host: Eggs.

But it's from the "dairy" section of the supermarket! (I have heard this. I'm not lactose-intolerant, but my SO is, and I was talking to someone about lactose intolerance and how remarkably decent Breyers' lactose-free vanilla ice cream is... and it came up.)

By this person's logic, other things that are dairy are: pre-made Jello gelatin cups, orange juice, bagels, "natural" peanut butter, shredded potatoes, and cans of whack-a-biscuit dough. They're all in the same aisle in my supermarket, and some are closer to the milk than the eggs are.

hummus and horseradish too.

Depending on your supermarket, yes.

Also packages of lutefisk that turn up at Christmas and don't have anywhere else to go.

We don't get that here in Boston at Whole Foods afaik. We do have 18 kinds of tofu and things made out of tofu though.

And all of that (hummus, horseradish, tofu)--isn't in my dairy department.

Lutefisk...no, you won't get that in Boston. The Midwest keeps it all to itself. Lucky us!

Sometimes we have terriifying fish in our fish department. I hate when they hide a monkfish under the clams and oysters. It always scares the ever living crap out of me.

The fish in lutefisk isn't scary on its own--it's usually cod--but the texture it gets after being dried and soaked in lye (and then soaked in water to get out the lye) is fairly daunting, IMO. (And also the warnings like, "don't use silver utensils, because lutefisk ruins silver," and "do the dishes right away, because otherwise you'll never get the lutefisk off.")

Lots of people here like it. It doesn't taste bad. It's just weird.

I've heard about it on PHC. I don't think I want it. I like fish. I like cod when it is broiled or made into fish and chips or something.

I don't blame you. My ex-MIL threw a fit if someone didn't eat it at Christmas, so I ate it. I don't have to do that any more.

It is actually considered an acquired taste in Norway, too. It's not like the French and snails, most people I know have not had lutefisk, myself included.

We have scarier food, though. Like smalahovud. I can't imagine eating it AT ALL.

Lutefisk is the only one available here (at least by those names), in small-town Minnesota. (And I'm a transplant, so I only know what stuff is called in the supermarket. I'm the one looking for collard greens and rutabagas.)

But no matter what I think of lutefisk, I know it didn't come out of a cow. *g*

I'm irrationally curious about the cheese and bacon paste you can get in tubes in Norway. (I may have gotten confused about the flavors or country here. But my brains says bacon and Norway.)

You're not missing out on the first two, I can tell you... Anyway, surströmming is mostly about the noxious smell, so you can often experience it just by standing near someone while they eat it ;)

This is true. I was just there, along with possibly every resident of Brookline and their children, one of whom was screaming for Vitamin Water. They may have had V-Water made out of tofu, but I avoided that aisle.

I'm allergic to dairy (not lactose intolerant, they're different things, honest) and I have this conversation at least once a week.

I really want to sit them all down and teach a class on how eggs and milk can't come from the same place, unless it's a platypus.

(Also, I may be totally wrong, but isn't the dumbness of the overheard statement the eggs thing and not at all the fact that a lactose intolerant person is eating butter?...)
