I know it because of my psychic learnings
Over in the little_details community, chibiyaoichan asks if twins can actually manifest each other's physical pain.

The consensus of the community is "no, not in real life."

This doesn't sit well with icedmaple, who is a psychic and has proof that she found on the internet which consists entirely of personal anecdotes.

Then she has a little fit on her journal. Twice.

How dare you not delete her comments in order to prove that she's irrational? That's just mean, kutsuwamushi. >:(

She called my beliefs "nonsense" and when I pointed out that she couldn't say that about religion, which is about as easy to prove, went off on a tangent about how people don't think religion is fact either. Even though I'd just pointed out that intelligent design is taught in schools.

Wow. icedmaple & gullibility = OTP. Question authority, icedmaple , question authority!

I'm trying to see how the concept of intelligent design being taught in schools proves anything but the idiocy of the American school system.

Oh, well, if something's taught in school, it must be true!

So annoying - whenever I read the sentence, the noise of my headdesking twin distracts me and I lose the thread. :(

I imagine it must be very upsetting that you keep getting your headdesking twin's headaches, too. :(

It's one big mess all around. Sometimes it's hard to say who's getting whose headache or if we were supposed to have a headache in the first place.

But it could be worse. We could be Millyfan and Shadsie.

"Intelligent design is taught in schools, therefore religion isn't nonsense."

Hey, can I play in that arena of logic?

"Abstinence-only education is taught in schools, therefore only married straight people can make babies."

Is it bad that I passed a giant billboard with a sillouhette of a pregnant woman that says 'Abstinence works'...

.. and all I really wanted to do was troll this country baptist town by adding 'So does abortion' beneath it?

There are two billboards around here that say, "Abortion kills babies and hurts women." I've never been tempted to set something on bunches and bunches of fire so much in my life.

So no, I don't think that's bad. Although I'd be tempted to put up a picture of the Virgin Mary on it and add, "No, it doesn't."

I don't get it... if they're trying to promote abstinence, shouldn't they be showing a not pregnant woman?

Where I live, they have these creeptastic ones with the little babies in backwards baseball caps and so on, and little animated butterflies and things like, "Before I was even born my heart was beating."

And I often scream, "EVEN BEFORE I WAS BORN, not, "before I was even born," you fuckers! Grammar!" as I drive by. With occasional mutters of how heart cells beat on their own. Not my happy place ...

Is she saying that teaching intelligent design = some people believing that religion is fact?

I don't think that's unreasonable, which is why I'm pretty sure that's *not* what she was saying. Anyone have a translation?

From what I've read, that's what she's getting at, which ... you're right, that's not unreasonable. But then she had to go and phrase it like THAT.

Since she says elsewhere that she doesn't believe in any gods, I'm sure she isn't endorsing intelligent design. I believe her point is something to the effect that there is a double standard in society, in that religious beliefs are accepted by many as fact, despite lack of evidence, whereas paranormal beliefs are not. As this is obviously not true in this particular community, the point is not well-taken, I think.

If you exchanged "accepted as fact" for "treated with respect," she might actually be making a good point. No atheist with half-decent manners throws around words like "nonsense" or "delusional" in discussion with a religious person.

There are a sad number of athiests out there without half-decent manners, unfortunately.

Um, intelligent design may only be taught in schools if you go to a private religious school.

A Kansas public school board tried to add it a few years ago. They were swiftly voted out, though. It seems that there are fewer people wanting pseudoscience being taught in schools then the Religious Right would want you to believe.
