Entry tags:defensiveness ahoy, magic 8 ball sez: wank again later, miss cleo told me i'm special, not enough wtf in the world, small but tasty, taking shit too seriously, useless facts

I know it because of my psychic learnings
Over in the little_details community, chibiyaoichan asks if twins can actually manifest each other's physical pain.

The consensus of the community is "no, not in real life."

This doesn't sit well with icedmaple, who is a psychic and has proof that she found on the internet which consists entirely of personal anecdotes.

Then she has a little fit on her journal. Twice.

How dare you not delete her comments in order to prove that she's irrational? That's just mean, kutsuwamushi. >:(

Since she says elsewhere that she doesn't believe in any gods, I'm sure she isn't endorsing intelligent design. I believe her point is something to the effect that there is a double standard in society, in that religious beliefs are accepted by many as fact, despite lack of evidence, whereas paranormal beliefs are not. As this is obviously not true in this particular community, the point is not well-taken, I think.

If you exchanged "accepted as fact" for "treated with respect," she might actually be making a good point. No atheist with half-decent manners throws around words like "nonsense" or "delusional" in discussion with a religious person.

There are a sad number of athiests out there without half-decent manners, unfortunately.

Thinking it really hard, on the other hand, is totally okay. (And adds in a bonus test of psychic powers!)

While for a religious person it is A-OK to throw around "immoral" and "abomination" and "you will burn in hell for eternity" while talking to an atheist.

Atheists like it when you tell them they'll burn in hell-- it shows how much concern you have for their soul!

Right! It's how the religious crazies show their love -- if they really hated you, they'd punish you by not telling you that you were going to burn in hell, therefore denying you the chance to realize you're in the wrong and repent and be saved. But of course, being good religious crazies, they don't hate anybody, so they give you plenty of opportunities to realize that you're a sinner and change your ways.

(I hate that I have actually met people who think this way.)

Religious people with half-decent manners don't do it either. Amazing fact: there are asstards on both sides of the fence!

This is exactly how I interpreted it. (I'm Kutsuwamushi.) She was trying to complain that we didn't give her belief in psychic powers the same type of respect we give to religion, and that that was an unfair double standard.

Which didn't work very well, for two reasons: I gave her belief in psychic powers exactly the same respect that I do religion, and she was making that complaint about lack of respect while calling religion "unsubstantiated bollocks."

(As an atheist with--I think--half-decent manners, I won't call someone's religious belief nonsense to their face unless they're rude to me first.)

She's not very good at debating, is she? I had to LOL when she oh-so-cunningly asked, "what is your faith?"

NO DON'T ANSWER IT'S A TRAP! A TRAP!!!

Yeah, it sort of didn't help that lederhosen was either atheist or agnostic.
