A friend of mine went to Japan and confessed that he spent almost an hour playing with the toilet at the place he was staying at in Tokyo. He seemed torn between being embarrassed about it and wanting to encourage everybody he talked to do the same thing.

I don't blame him. The fanciest one I encountered was at a ryokan in Kyoto -- it had all the various bidet-type functions, plus the noisemaker, plus dual-flush, and best of all, a heated seat. That may not seem like much, but when it's November and you're getting up at 7:00 AM and the bathroom isn't particularly well-heated...

Heated seats are pretty standard in many Japanese homes by now, too.

They have similar toilets in the hotels in Korea as well. We were all too chicken to play with the button collection until our last night, when the entire group gathered in one bathroom and took turns pressing them to see what would happen.

Our joy when we saw that one of them sent a jet of water 2 metres into the air and straight towards the bathtub was indescribable.

0.o Why does someone design a toilet that does that? Maybe it was the special tourist edition, "Guranteed to surprise and delight your visitors!"

(I wonder if they lined up the toilet and the bathtub on purpose?)

I DID THAT TOO. In my defense, I was really too jet-lagged to accomplish much else.

Dude, I don't need encouraging, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I've always wanted to travel to Japan, and the very first thing on the top of my list would be 'find awesome Japanese toilet; spend rest of day playing with it'.

Now that is totally on the top of my list, too.
