Because it's so dense -- which is why they're so soft -- it retains water like hell and then gets all fungusy and gross. And they can get really sick if their fur is left wet. That's why if you have chinchillas it's best to have them drink out of one of those bottles with a metal nozzle, and why they have dustbaths.
