In the "craftgrrl" community, hamburgerhop makes a post asking for advice about her costume idea. People on the internet being intelligent, kind, civil individuals, respond that it is tasteless but provide the relevant information and then ignore it. Right?

First comment says....no.

I knit, so I'm dressing up as Madame Defarge from A Tale Of Two Cities. I found a shirt and a skirt I can wear over a long old-timey looking nightgown I have, and I just picked up a mob cap at a local costume shop and knit myself a little tricolor rosette to pin to it, and I'm going to just walk around, eyeing people and knitting ominously.

...I have kind of resigned myself, though, to people thinking I'm "some kind of pilgrim lady or something."

I'm going as Hannibal Lecter. Because my department and the Pharmacy department are allying for a team theme. Pharmacy is all famous detectives and crime fighters. Business Office is all the criminals they put behind bars. (Black streamers around our desks for bars even.)
