Marriage has been, in the past, for the sole purpose of continuing the human race. Love could come AFTER finding and marrying someone suitable to help raise children.

I feel obliged to point out that for a long, LONG time the main purpose of marriage, according to the Roman Catholic Church, was to help two people grow into a deeper unity with God.
