Words are hard :(
And now, the newest addition to the short list of words that don't exist: vainglorious.

If at any point you find yourself going "is the average person likely to know what this word is", and the answer is "no"?
Find another way to write it.

Is there a number of syllables I should be shooting for here? Two or three? Is there a limit on the number of letters? Big words are bad, right? Got it. Gods know, I don't want to risk overtaxing the feeble mind of an "average person", especially since none of them can apparently use a dictionary.

Nobody I know has ever used the word vainglorious or vainglory, and I know plenty of writing-type people.

I guess "writers" is another one of those fancy in-ter-lectual-type words that the average person isn't familiar with.

...Or are they trying to say that they know people who are like writers, but not actually writers?

The upside of stuff like this is that I feel like a supergenius for being able to figure out what "vainglorious" means by, you know, looking at it. Is this a special power that only we select few wankas possess or what?

It also makes me want to start working words like "contumacious" into internet arguments. If "vainglorious" is hard, "contumacious" ought to make their heads explode. The contumacious twits.

Nobody I know has ever used the word vainglorious or vainglory, and I know plenty of writing-type people.

Let's translate:

My world is tiny and I have no desire to expand it. Neither should anyone else, especially "writing-type people"! I am threatened by people who point out my ignorance, which I will disguise with pithy remarks and contempt. My RP is too cool for people who know how to use Real Words!

It'd be sad if it wasn't so damn hilarious, lol.

What gets me about cases like these is that the people complaining are doing so on their computers. I don't know about them, but my browser has a google toolbar right in it. When I encounter a word I don't know, before rather than mouthing off about it, I copy-paste it into the search and usually learn something. If only they would do the same.

In other, shorter, words: GOOGLE MOAR.
