The Lotus Boob! It does haunt my dreams!
Over at PostSecret, Frank posts a postcard from someone containing a photo of the "Lotus Boob." (For those who aren't in the know, it's a picture of a breast that was clearly photoshopped together with a lotus flower and passed around the 'net as some sort of new horrible disease. Denounced by Snopes in 19-diggity-2.)

Whingeing follows immediately. (See Frank's email picks near and around the offending secret.) Hilarious quote from front page:

"This picture has destroyed my day and will haunt me for months if not years. My hair is standing on end and I haven't been able to stop shivering. I can't concentrate on anything now, my mind always returns to that horrific image.

I am saddened that I can no longer view postsecret, but I am too worried about being assailed with another photo that will severely harm my psyche."

Hordes of young girls are scarred for life and "kept up half the night shivering!" A thread is started on PostSecret Chat to determine whether the secret should be taken down.

Some (read: most) dissenters claim that taking down secrets would completely ruin the spirit of PostSecret, and that there have been secrets that have been far more disturbing, like ones about rape and abuse. But it's a boob! With stuff in it! And now they'll never sleep again, and probably die and I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY, POSTSECRET.

Ahem... 101 pages of flouncing and crying in less than a day, and all I really have to say is, if your constitution is too weak to handle a little lotus boob, you may want to reconsider this whole "internet" thing.

ETA: Bonus LOL: The random-lettered link to the secret includes the phrase "AAAAAAAAH."

I think it really helped that I went to google what a lotus pod looked like first.

I didn't even google a lotus pod. I think I may have seen it on one of my many lulzy LJ comms and just tilted my head a bit.

I thought it was an interesting shop and pressed on to whatever the hell I was looking at when I first saw it.

I wasn't...

I actually thought it was neat looking and it made me want to go poking at a lotus. I'm kind of weird though.

Me too, but the thing is, I actually like lotus pods and similar looking things. Stuff with holes that you can go a-pokin'.

Same here. Lotus Breast fascinates me, it does't disgust me.

You'd probably have trypophilia then - a liking of small uneven holes!

Trypophilia? They'll try to poke anything?

(Ohhhhh that's painful, sorry about that.)

I just found it disturbingly fascinating, like that frog that lays eggs under its own skin.

That's exactly what it made me think of, too. And I think those frogs are seriously cute, so the manip really didn't bother me much at all. (I think I was brainwashed by reading Gerald Durrell books as a child.)

Snopes was actually the first place I saw it, and I have to say my first reaction was hysterical laughter at thinking anyone thought that it was real.

Although, to be fair, not everyone's seen a lotus before.

I wasn't squicked till everyone started talking about worms and maggots. Originally, my brain processed it as a clump of eyes in someone's boob and, well, that was kinda neat. If bizarre.

I could not for the life of me figure out what it was. And it was intriguing, but not enough for me to go googling. So, wank to the rescue again.

I find it strangely compelling. I had to click on the link just to see it again, becaues I had forgotten how cool it is.

It didn't bother me that much, mostly because it was still a boob. Big, small, healthy, shooped or saline-filled, all boobies need love and I am here to fill that need.

It didn't bother me until one of the posters above started talking about bloody lotus seeds. GEEE, THANKS!

The picture itself is kinda weird, but not really that gross to me.

I didn't see it until this post, but it doesn't really bother me. Then again I knew it was a fake before I even clicked (though honestly I think I would have known.)

Then again even real gross medical things don't always bother me as much as they do some people.

Nope. After you've seen a guy with his face eaten off by turtles and someone trying very hard to dissect their own arm down to the bone, it's hard to get disturbed by a pretty obvious photoshop.

It hasn't ever bothered me, either, because it's always looked clearly fake to me. Then again, I never saw it back in my younger internet-browsing days, so who knows what I would've thought then!
