Welcome to the "Least Intelligent Student Union in the Country"
The student council at Carleton University in Ottawa has made a shocking discovery*: Cystic Fibrosis only affects white men, and is therefore not an "inclusive enough" disease to raise money for. Needless to say, this causes a leeeetle backlash.

In response, the person who originally made the motion to remove CF from their charity list is "currently not able to live happily." How sad. :(

ETA: *And by "shocking", I mean "completely false".

Can you explain it to me? Because all I can see from it is 'this only affects a certain population, so we won't care' which... doesn't sound good in any way.

And maybe that is what they meant, I'm just having a hard time seeing anyone saying that while not trying to be assholes.

What makes it even more inane is that it doesn't affect only a certain population, so it's lose-lose all the way 'round.

They certainly win the douchebag award with each new detail that comes out.

But it does only affect a certain population. Cystic fibrosis only affects people who happen to have cystic fibrosis. Sheesh.

I think what they meant was 'it doesn't effect a large enough group of people so we'd rather give the money to different (And local?) charities.'

They just worded it horribly.

Well, it's good to know that even diseases get to have popularity contests!

The base assumption is that diversity is a good thing, and representing all people in all areas is a good thing. Which is fine if you're talking about, say, a food bank that does its job and makes sure that regardless of race or ethnicity, everyone gets a proportional amount of food/resources. When you apply it to disease, you look like an asshat, because you are.

When you clearly have no idea how the disease works or what caucasian means, that just makes it infinitely worse.
