My word count is pastede on yay
Someone claims to have 'won' NaNoWriMo with 2.5 million words, a feat so fantabulous it apparently requires announcing twice.

Unfortunately, checking out his website reveals that he used a less than conventional technique to reach this count:

In order to compile so many words in such a short time, Leach leaned heavily on the Internet. He generated what he calls a “non-linear literary collage” by mining various blogs, chat rooms and fan fiction sites, grabbing whatever words caught his eye.

“The talk pages of Wikipedia and the reader comments on io9.com were my absolute favorites,” he said. “These are my people. I shamelessly plagiarized their words -- even their misspellings and gramatical errors -- at every opportunity, combining the anonymous messages with recycled content from ‘Marienbad My Love’ and entries from my dream journal. I repeatedly cut and pasted and searched and replaced, transforming the various writings into a completely new and unique literary work.”

NaNoers are Not Amused.

Edited to add the best replies from the forums so far:

yukongold: Plagiarizing other peoples' words is not writing. It's plagiarism, pure and simple, contrary to the spirit of Nano.

Not to mention that your pretense is so thick you could stand on it and not worry about sinking for a good three hours.

Sashimisan: Exactly.

I have more respect for someone who struggled to cross the finish line with 50K of their own words than I do for a plagiarist who filled a document with thousands of pages of nonsense.

sniderman: Next year, I plan to do the same thing for my NaNo. I plan to title it "The Stand by Stephen King."

MrHeywire: You, my dear dirtysockface, deserve to have all your clean underwear burned, your washing machine broken and your water cut off. How dare you claim to be an author when not one word was arranged into a sentence by your miserable self this month!
Even without you, those of us who have done this honestly have still surpassed a total 1.5 billion words, so I have no reason to not wish your word count to be retracted from the totals.

Wishing your head to be lovingly placed in a bucket of cement;
--Me

Son of edit:

MrHeywire's post is deleted, but oh, the replacement is STELLAR.

marienbadmylove: Hey MrHeywire, your post is one of my favorites to date. A couple of people have wished violence upon me, but you’re the first who actually wanted to see me dead (in a loving way, of course). Still, I liked this post slightly better: “But you are using other people's words. I feel that the point of NaNo is to write in your own words.” Here is my point: They are my own words! I stole them, and now they belong to me. That’s what I do. I’m an auto thief. I knock out the driver’s side window, hot wire the ignition and take off for the local chop shop. I file off the VIN numbers and strip out the valuable parts. I bolt various body panels together into a stylistic abomination. I re-spray the thing vomit green, add insulting graffiti along the fenders and hang a crap-scented air freshener from the rear view mirror (to cover up the stench of the dead body in the trunk). Twenty-eight days later, I drive it to the local car show and park it alongside the other entries. Look, people are throwing rotten tomatoes at it. What fun! How will I top myself for the 2009 NaNoWriMo? Here’s an idea: steal synopsis and excerpt texts from the “Novel Info” sections of this year’s winners. Already a story idea is beginning to form… A guy in a government post, who has an entirely contended existence, abruptly and lacking reason, packs his vomit green automobile with objects such as his nativity record, crap-scented air freshener and a severed head in a bucket of cement and maneuvers away.

I get that NaNo is an honor-based system but still? That's a douche bag on monumental scale.

...NaNoWriMo is a contest with a single winner?

First I heard that theory, I thought it was just a game you were playing with yourself to see if YOU could do it.

And besides, I'm much prouder of my 51K words that are actually kind of not bad than I would be of 2 million words that'd suck.

The term for this is "editing" not "writing". He's an editor not a writer.

I don't believe that Nanowrimo is about how many words you can edit in a single month.

Why? Why put all the effort into "beating" other people when it's not a contest, especially when the effort is in copying and pasting random shit? The guy must have even lower self-esteem than I do, man.

Oh, goody, you won — and won the most — a contest that doesn't have one individual winner by breaking its rules.

Author-accomplishment assassination wank report wins international writing award
Response to vainglorious author's pseudo-press release inspires righteous indignation of Journalfen's best wankas

Noshiro, Japan – Internet poster [info]ladylauren has earned the Noshiro English Language Writing Is Really Awesome award for a 218 word wank report on a community known as Off the Fandom Wank, and she managed not to namedrop America's elect President-Elect, not even once.

“My word count is pastede on yay” is the story of a pretentiously wanky assviking who copypastas two and a half million words worth of internet discussion and blog comments, where people often write actually witty, clever, and engaging material. Said assviking had devolved into a grandiloquent doucheturkey who lives in his own delusions of adequacy and worships himself as a literary genius. [info]ladylauren describes her post as a summary of Assviking's attempt to induce awe in others, and their responses to him, to loltastic effect.

“I introduced the wanker of 'Obama intergalactic assassination blah blah' to serve as a sort of target for pointing and laughing at,” [info]ladylauren said to me, really for realsies. “When I entered the Noshiro English Language Writing Is Really Awesome contest on Nov. 30, the wank report had no structure. I pictured the wanker - either for serious or a troll, we don't know yet which - on a mission to promote himself with the winningest NaNo novel ever. But soon after finding all the relevant links I read that he was a complete and total buttnugget. How could I pass up a huge mockery hook like that?"

The Noshiro English Language Writing Is Really Awesome Award is a daily writing contest in which participants try to write something, anything in English that is vaguely intelligible (at least one whole word strung together, misspellings okay) for as long as [info]caito lives there. [info]ladylauren finished "My word count is pastede on yay" at 7:50pm (her local time) on November 30, when [info]caito wasn't around to check because she was away for the weekend.

“I can confidently say that out of the thousands of winning contestants today, no one exceeded my official word count,” [info]ladylauren might say, if anyone asked her. “The contest's other participants are native speakers of Japanese, and I am totally so much transcendent at this than they are. One high school girl filled in a blank Dinosaur Comic with lyrics from Avril Lavigne's hit single 'Girlfriend.' Oh man, I totally pwned her ass so hard."

In order to compile her report in such a short time, [info]ladylauren leaned heavily on the Internet. She generated what she calls a “standard wank report” by mining various forums, blogs and websites, grabbing whatever words were relevant to the wank.

“The two self-promoting posts he made on the NaNoWriMo forum were my absolute favorites,” she maybe said. “He is my wanker. I shamelessly plagiarized his words -- even his pomposity and ostentation -- at every opportunity, combining the anonymous comments of others with content from his blog and entries from my own NaNo attempt. I copied and pasted and did up some fancy-schmancy html for links, transforming the various writings into a completely new and unique literary work, in the proud tradition of Steven Vander Ark.”

Haha, look at his bio.

Brief Author Bio:

Here is the most important thing I can tell you about myself: Whatever is personal about me, about my life, is hollow and insubstantial compared to “Marienbad My Love.” My 17-million-word novel is the story of my inner world, of what Carl Jung called “the self-realization of the unconscious.” This is all that matters. All of the outward events of my 47 years – the professional accomplishments, people, travels – pale beside this inner reality. “Marienbad My Love” is really not a novel at all, but an autobiography of the “I” who dwells within.

Having a bunch of NaNo-related plagiarized dreck is the most important thing in his life. This explains a lot about him.
