J'accuse!
The 2008 Weblog voting is open now. But some people smell a rat - Cake Wrecks, a popular humor blog, is completely smashing the other blogs in the "Food" category. There is confusion! Bickering! Recriminations!

Ok, so mostly it's just one person who insists that he knows more about what's happening on the WBA servers than the admins and owners of the site do. Bonus that the owner of the site's husband is getting into the mix. There's also a post up on the blog about it, so I anticipate tons of indignant readers dogpiling on that thread.

I am simply shocked that there could be perfidy about in something as serious as the Weblogs Awards--oh wait no, they've always been exercises in ballot-stuffing.

Someone is New to the Internets!

I think Fuck You Penguin and ONTD are also pwning their respective categories. You know, because o hai! the Weblog Awards let you vote multiple times.

From what I can see browsing through the categories, is that blogs (ONTD is a blog?) that encourage reader participation and respond to comments are blowing away the competition. Quelle surprise.

I love it when foodies get their wank on. Few things are better than a frothing at the mouth flame war about cake.

Altough now I'm hungry. Perhaps I'll take this as a sign to have some delicious, delicious cake.

I wish it were easier for people to sign up and comment there, because most of Cake Wrecks' readers aren't foodies, and the resulting clash between the actual food blogs' readers and them would be epic.

Cakewrecks post is less dogpile at the moment and more "WE'RE NUMBER 1! WOOOOOO!" and some people criticizing the grammar of the post.

The forum post, meanwhile, is a delicious carnival of "how SUSPICIOUS that they defend the honor of their fans!", Jon and an admin being very polite at each other, and the guy being doggedly persistent. Over and over again. Right on to page 3.

Mmmm, I do love me some paranoia cookies with passive-aggressive frosting.

I also loved that votes being cast "in the middle of the night" were suspicious. Because the internet=America donchaknow.

And nobody ever works at night. That's just crazy talk.

Because you're only allowed to be defensive once they explicitly accuse you/your readers of cheating, not when it's merely implied!

And as far as this is concerned you don't need expertise, just common sense.
Sean has said these votes look legit, I don't doubt they do look that way. It doesn't explain the pattern though.

In other words, "common sense" contradicts the reality of what the servers say, so the servers must be what's wrong!

I smelled something fishy when an American soccer-only blog (Soccer by Ives) is currently second in the Sports Blog voting.

And I find Fuck You Penguin stunningly unfunny (like CO run by 4channers).

I ♥ CW, and thanks to this whole award thing I found the $.99 Cent Store chef's blog. I know which food blog I'll be voting for next year, once they get Cake Wrecks correctly sorted into the humor category.

Haha, Cakewrecks, how I love you! (And I don't even bake!)

That said, there is hilarity on all sides of this one! "Oh no! Something funny is popular! They must be cheating!" "Oh no, people are asking questions! Destroy them, my pretties!"
