People can't be an assault victims until they've been criticized
The CBC reports a story about a 66-year-old missionary, Eloise Bergen, and her husband who was assaulted in Kenya earlier this year, and recently testified against her assaulters. People feel the need to state their opinions in the comments:

donnico: maybe the Indigenous people of Africa don't want to be 'civilized and christianized'.

RogerKolbe: [replying to donnico] Then don't complain when the Janjaweed dismembers live victims, when baby girls are raped to cure aids, or slavery runs rampant.

Your type is usually at the front of the line when atrocities happen, crying 'we should do something!"

clearlight makes several snarky comments, all along the lines of "Religious fools rush in where rational beings fear to tread. ;-)" and all with a passive aggressive wink emoticon at the end.

AlanHarrison: There should be a special tax put on all travel to dangerous destinations to fund the health care and rehabilitation that people require when they return....

I bet you that if these people had just stayed in Canada, they wouldn't have been beaten and raped. But they made a conscious decision to go somewhere dangerous. I also made a conscious decision to smoke my cigars and I have to pay a SHEEEEEEEEE-ATSU load of tax to do so. Fair's fair!

There are no people who are beaten or raped in Canada. No way.

skippi: I have read that people who can genuinely forgive someone who has wronged them heal completely and more quickly than those who cannot. Either the Bergens are the living proof of that or he and/or she are ticking time bombs. I sincerely hope it is the former.

Victims must forgive their attackers or else they aren't good Christians, and may one day kill other people!

This story has been widely reported by Canadian media, so there are even more choice comments, including an opinion piece and replies on the Globe and Mail site. There are also articles from when the assault occurred, including a longer comment thread at the original CBC article.

ETA: Sorry, was a mispost (the comments I originally found were wanky rather than plain depressing, and I forgot to change the field). The recipes sound delicious, though.

Huh.

Wow.

Yeah.

Unfunny mispost? Please say this was a mispost and you meant to put this in unfunny business and you just got distracted? Cause I'm trying desperately not to imagine that someone, somewhere thinks religious fervor (however misplaced) makes rape and assault funny.

How hard is it to understand that this comm is for things that are fucking funny so you can laugh at them?

If this didn't make you laugh, then you shouldn't have posted it, and if it did, then you should seek professional help.

Rape (including blaming the victim of sexual assault), dismemberment, slavery, an underlying current of racism ... it's hard to imagine how this could be more unfunny if you tried. Okay, I can imagine, but I don't want to.

Half-ass Dip:

1/2 cup cottage cheese
2 oz. solid white albacore tuna, drained
2 T of any chunky-type salsa

Plop the cottage cheese into a small bowl. Plop tuna on top of that. Spill salsa on top of that. Serve with tortilla chips, Triscuits, pita bread, crisp bread or eat it with a spoon. Use MOAR! salsa if desired. If the cottage cheese is lowfat or a little more liquidy, use more of the salsa.

Pernil

1 pork shoulder (not ham, funny story behind that)
adobo
minced garlic (optional)
apple cider vinegar
a day or so in advance

Lay out the pork shoulder on tinfoil and, using a long, pointy knife wider than your finger, poke channels into the meat through the skin and close to, but not touching the bone. Mix spices (adobo and minced garlic if you like) and apple cider vinegar into a paste and, using a finger or injector, get the paste into the channels. Rub excess paste all over the outside. Wrap the pork and place in the fridge overnight.

When you're ready to cook, preheat the oven to the highest heat it'll take (500 degrees F is advised, but I have yet to see a hotter oven). Place the roast in a roasting pan with the side that has the most skin up and cook at high heat for 30 minutes. Then turn the heat down to 350 and cook for another 30 minutes per pound. Let it sit for a while before serving or it'll fall apart and not in a good way.

Rosewater-lemon fish
[info]sarracenia
2009-01-15 09:28 pm UTC (link)
As many fish fillets as you want to cook, preferably the very thin type you get with Dover sole. Alternatively, you can pound virtually any kind of fish thinner. Which is also good if you don't actually like the type of fish you're cooking.
Enough lemons that you can put two slices/filet (approx 1 every four fillets normally for me)
Flour
Seasoned salt (I can't find the recipe for the mixture I use, but it involves 30 garlic cloves)
Oil or butter
Rosewater

Take the fillets. Dredge them in the flour/seasoned salt mixture. Put them in the preheated oiled pan. Cook for a minute, maybe less if you're using really thin slices. Turn them over and put the lemon slices on top. Squirt some rosewater on them. Cook until ready. Serve.

Making enough for more than one or two people usually involves multiple batches, so I have people come over and eat theirs while it's warm.

joye's Gin Salad Dressing
[info]joye
2009-01-15 09:39 pm UTC (link)
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon light-colored vinegar (I use white rice wine vinegar)
3 tablespoons gin
1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds, crushed with the back of a spoon/mortar and pestle (or a pinch of dry mustard)
1 garlic clove, minced fine

Mix it up, taste it, and add salt and pepper as need. Serve over your favorite greens (I like half butterleaf and half iceberg, plus a sliced up green onion). Top with stir-fried chicken and romano cheese and it's a lovely meal. Call it Asian fusion and charge twice as much! :3

It tastes different but if you don't know it's gin, you probably won't identify it. For this reason it can be fun to make people guess the secret ingredient, but obviously if you're going to surprise people, make sure these are people you know drink alcohol. Messing with someone's sobriety or personal beliefs is NOT good eats.

What I Am Making For Dinner:
[info]notarose
2009-01-15 11:25 pm UTC (link)
Mexican Noodle Device, original recipe (Fideo Secos) by Chef Tom of the University of Montana and adapted for leftover lamb by me:

Puree a couple of pasillas, or soak a couple of pepper's worth of dried anchos and puree them with a bit of water. Take a tomato and some tomatillos (with the husks off and the soapiness rinsed away) and broil them until they're all burned-y. Take off the tomato skin and squeeze out the seeds, but leave the tomatillos as is. Puree with the pepper. Add a thick slice of onion, lots of crushed/minced garlic, cinnamon, oregano, cumin, hot sauce, salt, and a little sugar. Puree.

Heat oil in a big-ish saucepan. Dump in the goo and cook it down until the flavors are concentrated-y. Meanwhile, spread some spaghetti or angel hair on a cookie sheet, pizza pan, or whatever, and cook them dry in the over until they're a darker color. Take them out and don't let them burn! Also meanwhile, cube your leftover roast lamb, pork, or beef, or debone leftover chicken. If you're vegetarian, griddled seitan with Mexican herbs is good. Add 2 or 3 cans of chicken or vegetable broth (approximately 28 to 42 ounces) to the sauce and bring it to a bubble. Stir in the meat, but if it's griddled seitan just keep it warm on the side, you can put it on the top later. When the meat is warm, add the browned pasta and cook until it's done.

Just before serving, stir in fresh parsley, cilantro, and mint. Top with guacomole, salsa, and crema, and garnish with cilantro.

Ooh!

I've been craving spicy food since this summer, and the sad fact is that the stuff I used to be satisfied by isn't cutting it any more. JalapeƱos barely register, cayenne doesn't help, and so on. I need new, really excessively make-you-cry hot foodstuffs. So, wankas, do you have any really wonderfully spicy dishes to recommend?
