People can't be an assault victims until they've been criticized
The CBC reports a story about a 66-year-old missionary, Eloise Bergen, and her husband who was assaulted in Kenya earlier this year, and recently testified against her assaulters. People feel the need to state their opinions in the comments:

donnico: maybe the Indigenous people of Africa don't want to be 'civilized and christianized'.

RogerKolbe: [replying to donnico] Then don't complain when the Janjaweed dismembers live victims, when baby girls are raped to cure aids, or slavery runs rampant.

Your type is usually at the front of the line when atrocities happen, crying 'we should do something!"

clearlight makes several snarky comments, all along the lines of "Religious fools rush in where rational beings fear to tread. ;-)" and all with a passive aggressive wink emoticon at the end.

AlanHarrison: There should be a special tax put on all travel to dangerous destinations to fund the health care and rehabilitation that people require when they return....

I bet you that if these people had just stayed in Canada, they wouldn't have been beaten and raped. But they made a conscious decision to go somewhere dangerous. I also made a conscious decision to smoke my cigars and I have to pay a SHEEEEEEEEE-ATSU load of tax to do so. Fair's fair!

There are no people who are beaten or raped in Canada. No way.

skippi: I have read that people who can genuinely forgive someone who has wronged them heal completely and more quickly than those who cannot. Either the Bergens are the living proof of that or he and/or she are ticking time bombs. I sincerely hope it is the former.

Victims must forgive their attackers or else they aren't good Christians, and may one day kill other people!

This story has been widely reported by Canadian media, so there are even more choice comments, including an opinion piece and replies on the Globe and Mail site. There are also articles from when the assault occurred, including a longer comment thread at the original CBC article.

ETA: Sorry, was a mispost (the comments I originally found were wanky rather than plain depressing, and I forgot to change the field). The recipes sound delicious, though.

1 pork shoulder (not ham, funny story behind that)
adobo
minced garlic (optional)
apple cider vinegar
a day or so in advance

Lay out the pork shoulder on tinfoil and, using a long, pointy knife wider than your finger, poke channels into the meat through the skin and close to, but not touching the bone. Mix spices (adobo and minced garlic if you like) and apple cider vinegar into a paste and, using a finger or injector, get the paste into the channels. Rub excess paste all over the outside. Wrap the pork and place in the fridge overnight.

When you're ready to cook, preheat the oven to the highest heat it'll take (500 degrees F is advised, but I have yet to see a hotter oven). Place the roast in a roasting pan with the side that has the most skin up and cook at high heat for 30 minutes. Then turn the heat down to 350 and cook for another 30 minutes per pound. Let it sit for a while before serving or it'll fall apart and not in a good way.

*raises hand*

What is adobo? Cuz this sounds delicious, but I have no clue what that part of the deliciousness is.

It's a spice blend from the Caribbean, consisting of salt, pepper, garlic, regional differences and some form of acid (lemon, vinegar, bitter orange). You can usually find it in the Hispanic foods section of the grocery store. Goya is the easiest brand to find, but LaFlor is the top shelf stuff.

Also, be sure it's either Goya or LaFlor. Because there is a HUGE difference between Caribbean adobo and Filipino adobo.

We had an Orphan's Thanksgiving this year at my In-Laws beach house and I swore I'd make it. But I didn't get hold of a roast in time. So, one friend who was attending says, "I'll find you one!" So, he calls all over town trying to find a Picnic ham.

Not a roast, a ham.

I correct him. He starts asking for a roast ham.

Somehow, it doesn't occur to me to further correct him, so when every fancy pants butcher in town tells us, "wait until Easter, then we'll have ham," I freak out and call my mother in NC (we were about 30 minutes away) begging for help, because we can't find ham.

Dead silence. Then, giggling.

"Mom, it's not FUNNY. I can't make Pernil without... Wait... Did *friend* pull a Bugs-and-Daffy on me?"

More laughing, along with the name of a grocery store that will probably have it.

So I call my friend and tell him sadly that we'll try again in spring, then open the door for him and hand him a fork saying, "Wabbit Season."

"Wabbit Season" now=Pernil.

It took me a second to figure out what you meant by Bugs-and-Daffy, but that's what I get for reading while trying to math at the same time. Once I got the math out, I found the story funny, I promise!

One last note about pernil

When done properly, the skin should be hard like a shell. You will need to break it off to get at the meaty goodness. For those who laugh at low-fat, it's better than potato chips, but a tad salty in places and VERY rich. I had a large slab of skin tonight and have given myself a lulu of a headache.

Otherwise, it's orgasmic and the leftovers make a damn fine sandwich with miracle whip and multigrain bread.
