People can't be an assault victims until they've been criticized
The CBC reports a story about a 66-year-old missionary, Eloise Bergen, and her husband who was assaulted in Kenya earlier this year, and recently testified against her assaulters. People feel the need to state their opinions in the comments:

donnico: maybe the Indigenous people of Africa don't want to be 'civilized and christianized'.

RogerKolbe: [replying to donnico] Then don't complain when the Janjaweed dismembers live victims, when baby girls are raped to cure aids, or slavery runs rampant.

Your type is usually at the front of the line when atrocities happen, crying 'we should do something!"

clearlight makes several snarky comments, all along the lines of "Religious fools rush in where rational beings fear to tread. ;-)" and all with a passive aggressive wink emoticon at the end.

AlanHarrison: There should be a special tax put on all travel to dangerous destinations to fund the health care and rehabilitation that people require when they return....

I bet you that if these people had just stayed in Canada, they wouldn't have been beaten and raped. But they made a conscious decision to go somewhere dangerous. I also made a conscious decision to smoke my cigars and I have to pay a SHEEEEEEEEE-ATSU load of tax to do so. Fair's fair!

There are no people who are beaten or raped in Canada. No way.

skippi: I have read that people who can genuinely forgive someone who has wronged them heal completely and more quickly than those who cannot. Either the Bergens are the living proof of that or he and/or she are ticking time bombs. I sincerely hope it is the former.

Victims must forgive their attackers or else they aren't good Christians, and may one day kill other people!

This story has been widely reported by Canadian media, so there are even more choice comments, including an opinion piece and replies on the Globe and Mail site. There are also articles from when the assault occurred, including a longer comment thread at the original CBC article.

ETA: Sorry, was a mispost (the comments I originally found were wanky rather than plain depressing, and I forgot to change the field). The recipes sound delicious, though.

What I Am Making For Dinner:

Mexican Noodle Device, original recipe (Fideo Secos) by Chef Tom of the University of Montana and adapted for leftover lamb by me:

Puree a couple of pasillas, or soak a couple of pepper's worth of dried anchos and puree them with a bit of water. Take a tomato and some tomatillos (with the husks off and the soapiness rinsed away) and broil them until they're all burned-y. Take off the tomato skin and squeeze out the seeds, but leave the tomatillos as is. Puree with the pepper. Add a thick slice of onion, lots of crushed/minced garlic, cinnamon, oregano, cumin, hot sauce, salt, and a little sugar. Puree.

Heat oil in a big-ish saucepan. Dump in the goo and cook it down until the flavors are concentrated-y. Meanwhile, spread some spaghetti or angel hair on a cookie sheet, pizza pan, or whatever, and cook them dry in the over until they're a darker color. Take them out and don't let them burn! Also meanwhile, cube your leftover roast lamb, pork, or beef, or debone leftover chicken. If you're vegetarian, griddled seitan with Mexican herbs is good. Add 2 or 3 cans of chicken or vegetable broth (approximately 28 to 42 ounces) to the sauce and bring it to a bubble. Stir in the meat, but if it's griddled seitan just keep it warm on the side, you can put it on the top later. When the meat is warm, add the browned pasta and cook until it's done.

Just before serving, stir in fresh parsley, cilantro, and mint. Top with guacomole, salsa, and crema, and garnish with cilantro.

And by "in the over" I mean in the oven.

Also, Mexican spices, not herbs, for the griddled seitan. Don't ask me how to make it; it's one of those things that gets made at about 7 am while I am no where near the kitchen.
