People can't be an assault victims until they've been criticized
The CBC reports a story about a 66-year-old missionary, Eloise Bergen, and her husband who was assaulted in Kenya earlier this year, and recently testified against her assaulters. People feel the need to state their opinions in the comments:

donnico: maybe the Indigenous people of Africa don't want to be 'civilized and christianized'.

RogerKolbe: [replying to donnico] Then don't complain when the Janjaweed dismembers live victims, when baby girls are raped to cure aids, or slavery runs rampant.

Your type is usually at the front of the line when atrocities happen, crying 'we should do something!"

clearlight makes several snarky comments, all along the lines of "Religious fools rush in where rational beings fear to tread. ;-)" and all with a passive aggressive wink emoticon at the end.

AlanHarrison: There should be a special tax put on all travel to dangerous destinations to fund the health care and rehabilitation that people require when they return....

I bet you that if these people had just stayed in Canada, they wouldn't have been beaten and raped. But they made a conscious decision to go somewhere dangerous. I also made a conscious decision to smoke my cigars and I have to pay a SHEEEEEEEEE-ATSU load of tax to do so. Fair's fair!

There are no people who are beaten or raped in Canada. No way.

skippi: I have read that people who can genuinely forgive someone who has wronged them heal completely and more quickly than those who cannot. Either the Bergens are the living proof of that or he and/or she are ticking time bombs. I sincerely hope it is the former.

Victims must forgive their attackers or else they aren't good Christians, and may one day kill other people!

This story has been widely reported by Canadian media, so there are even more choice comments, including an opinion piece and replies on the Globe and Mail site. There are also articles from when the assault occurred, including a longer comment thread at the original CBC article.

ETA: Sorry, was a mispost (the comments I originally found were wanky rather than plain depressing, and I forgot to change the field). The recipes sound delicious, though.

Ooh!

I've been craving spicy food since this summer, and the sad fact is that the stuff I used to be satisfied by isn't cutting it any more. Jalapeños barely register, cayenne doesn't help, and so on. I need new, really excessively make-you-cry hot foodstuffs. So, wankas, do you have any really wonderfully spicy dishes to recommend?

1. If you don't live in the UK, come here.
2. Find a city with a large university.
3. Find a rugby team out on the piss.
4. Follow them until they go into a curry house.
5. (They will. If they don't, you're probably following some other sports team. Go find rugby players instead.)
6. Sit near than and listen to what they're ordering. At some point, one of them will be dared to ask for a particular dish. Possibly one which isn't actually listed on the menu. If the waiter checks several times that they're really sure, you've hit gold.
7. Order that dish.
8. Eat it.
9. Realise why it's normally only ever consumed by people heavily numbed with alcohol. Weep for your now destroyed taste buds.

Thai Green Curry (Gaeng Kiow Wan)

My version of this recipe is aimed for maximum spiciness -- reduce the amount of curry paste if you're timid. It serves about 8, I think.

Thai Green Curry (Gaeng Kiow Wan)

1 lb. boneless chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
3 1/2 cup canned coconut milk, divided
1 – 4 oz. can green curry paste
About 2 cups zucchini, cut into chunks
2-3 T fish sauce
2 T brown sugar
1 tsp salt
12 fresh lime leaves (can substitute lime zest and lime juice)
1-2 cups Thai krapao basil (use leaves and flowers), or regular fresh basil
1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into long, thin strips

In a medium saucepan, warm 1/2 cup coconut milk over medium heat until it boils gently. Adjust the heat to maintain a gentle boil, stirring frequently, until tiny pools of oil glisten on the surface (about 3-5 minutes).

Add curry paste and stir to dissolve into the coconut milk. Cook for 1-2 minutes.

Increase heat. Add the chicken and stir fry to coat them evenly with the paste. Cook for about 2-4 minutes. Add the remaining 3 cups of coconut milk, zucchini, fish sauce, sugar and salt; stir well. Add lime leaves. Bring to a boil, adjust heat to maintain a gentle, active boil and cook for 8-10 minutes.

When chicken is done and zucchini is just tender, remove from the heat and mix in basil leaves and red pepper strips.

Serve with jasmine rice.

I love you for this. My tummy hates me for this, but my tastebuds don't give a flying fuck.

I like to add eggplant to this one, too.

Eggplant is actually more authentic! Completely authentic if you're using the small, round, green Thai eggplant. I like it that way too when I order it in restaurants, but just in general I'm a bigger fan of zucchini, so once I tried that substitution in my own version, I never went back.

The cheater's method to getting "make you cry" footstuffs is to get hot sauce which has been "enhanced" with pure capsaicin. There are many commonly available super-hot sauces which have hundreds of thousands of Scoville units. As a comparison, a jalapeno only has a mere five thousand or so.

If you're insane you can even try some of the rarer, specialty hot sauces that go up into the millions--as a comparison, pepper spray has 5 million Scoville units max.

Also, if your Thai food is just not hot enough, you can make this for a condiment from this recipe that's very imprecise, because I never, ever measure while making it:

Nam Plaa Preek

Combine:

Juice of one lime
Enough fish sauce to approximately match the amount of lime juice
1-2 T sugar

Whisk until sugar is dissolved. Adjust flavors to taste.

Horizontally slice some variety of fresh, thin, red, hot chili (like Thai kee noo chilies, or kung pao chilies, etc.). Do not seed them! Add sliced chilies with seeds to the mixture until you think there's enough. I usually put in enough so that the mixture is somewhere around 1/3 full of chilies.

Spoon onto any Thai dish you want to make hotter.
