Current mood:*sporfle!*

Whole new levels of batshit...
Not wank in the traditional sense, but c'mon. It's PETA. They're wanky all by themselves, often without even trying. Their newest not-so-new campaign? Save the Sea Kittens!

That's right. Sea kittens.

What, you ask, is a sea kitten? Just look at your local fish market, and you can find all sorts of cruelly butchered sea kittens! Trout kittens and sole kittens and cod kittens and haddock kittens.

Yup. This batshit is to make us feel like horrible, horrible people for killing fish by calling them kittens, because what sort of monster would kill and eat a kitten?!

The site really speaks for itself, complete with a form letter to send to your congressperson, a "dress up your kitten" game, and that old PETA standby, the rather graphic, overblown "children's story" that turns animals into neuroscientists (I'm not kidding) and humans into murderers.

Personally, I enjoy my sea kittens battered and fried and served with British chips. Mmm, sea kittens and chips...

Edit: My bad, it's not new to some people.

This game of creating your own 'sea kitten' brings me joy. I so just threw as much stuff as I could onto the fish and then named it 'Abomination.'

The irony of putting string and litter and OMG toxic lipstick on a fish was not lost on me.

I kept expecting something terrible to happen, like, if I put floaties on it the fish would be drawn to the surface and die.

I thought we already went through this months ago -- or maybe that was FARK.

In any case, my icon comes directly from this wonderful campaign.

Funny thing is I've been reading up on Jainism, and that's one of the beliefs of some of the more fundamentalist sects, as well as the priests. In order to harvest the root vegetable you have to kill the plant, and since every living thing has a soul killing should be avoided as much as possible. Even in the groups that do eat root vegetables they generally have one day a week they abstain from them and other vegetables...

Jainism, the only religion where the more fundamentalist you are, the more non-violent you become.

Okay guys, I need help. I have some frozen whole fish that I think are mackerel. I bought them at my local Asian seafood market any they have all kinds of weird things there, including frozen specimens of fish that I used to sell at a pet store. Anyways, I've simply been defrosting and gutting them (yep, they're completely whole) and sticking them in the oven on broil. I generally over cook them that way, though. So does anyone have an recipes for them? Keep in mind I have limited freezer space and I'm just cooking for myself.

This brings up a question for me: what's PETA's policy on carnivorous animals, like, you know, ACTUAL KITTENS? Not eating other living things is flat-out unhealthy for them--despite the large amount of pet-feed that's mostly corn bullshit. Do they think kittens should waste away in order to protect peaceful fish?

And what are we going to do with some of these animals once we stop needing to breed and raise them for food? Our breeds of cow have generally been bred to be waaaay too stupid to survive in any type of wild environment. Is it better for them to be mauled by wild coyotes?

Real question: What does PETA do when they get mice or cockroaches in their house? Do they set humane traps, or do they just let them over-run the house? Surely exterminating them wouldn't be in line with their values.

So are they dumping cockroaches on other people, or living in really dirty houses?

I would check their page for the answers, but I don't want to give them the hits.

I remember when I found out that my favorite actress supported PETA. It made me a sad panda. Why does she have to support the crazy animal advocacy group and ignore the sane ones that actually help animals.

btw, I wish my pet fish was still alive so I could rename her Sea Kitten.

As a D&D player, the phrase "sea kitten" makes me imagine the offspring of these things.

Probably not quite what PETA had in mind.
