Whole new levels of batshit...
Not wank in the traditional sense, but c'mon. It's PETA. They're wanky all by themselves, often without even trying. Their newest not-so-new campaign? Save the Sea Kittens!

That's right. Sea kittens.

What, you ask, is a sea kitten? Just look at your local fish market, and you can find all sorts of cruelly butchered sea kittens! Trout kittens and sole kittens and cod kittens and haddock kittens.

Yup. This batshit is to make us feel like horrible, horrible people for killing fish by calling them kittens, because what sort of monster would kill and eat a kitten?!

The site really speaks for itself, complete with a form letter to send to your congressperson, a "dress up your kitten" game, and that old PETA standby, the rather graphic, overblown "children's story" that turns animals into neuroscientists (I'm not kidding) and humans into murderers.

Personally, I enjoy my sea kittens battered and fried and served with British chips. Mmm, sea kittens and chips...

Edit: My bad, it's not new to some people.

Sharing thread: What's everyone's favorite sea kitten dish?

Mine's sea kittens and rice. I usually have it teriyaki-style or with butter and maple pepper.

My favorite recipe for Sea Kitteh is grilled with lime butter and then topped with fresh homemade salsa.

We had delicious fried sea kittens last night. We used tempura batter.

Now I'm hungry, damn it.

My favorite sea kitten recipe

Step one: catch approx 14 in. rainbow sea kitten in local lake.

Step two: bash it over the head and stuff in ice box.

Repeat until sea-kittening license is filled.

Step four: bone and gut sea-kittens. Have a fun time picking through innards to find out what insects are currently hatching. Serious sea-kitten connoisseurs will bring along a freshwater ecology book, and have a full on dissection on the bank.

Step five: Leave sea-kittens in skin, and fry on a grill in the back of the pick up. Squeeze lemons onto, and rub dill into, the sweet, sweet sea kitten flesh.

Step six: Eat until you are sick.

Steamed sea-kitten with ginger and shallots.

Steamed sea-kitten with ginger and shallots. (Asian-style)

White sea-kitten is best for this purpose - it brings out the flavour better. I recommend bream or snapper - those are usually the best sea-kitten types to cook this recipe with.

Get the sea-kittenmonger to scale and gut the sea-kitten first - it's a nasty, messy job to do at home!

Chop a ginger root into julienne strips (straws) and rub on inside and out of raw sea-kitten. Put sea-kitten into a steaming basket, cover with ginger strips inside and out, and hot steam for 5-10 minutes, or until the flesh flakes away from the bone. Meanwhile, slice the shallotts (spring onions? - the green stalky parts) into 3-inch lengths, then slice them lengthwise into thin strips. When the sea-kitten is nearly cooked, pile the shallotts on top and steam for a further 2 mins.

Take out the sea-kitten and arrange on a plate, dribble half a cup of soy sauce over the flesh, then heat a quarter-cup of oil until it reaches smoking point.

Stand back from plate, and pour the oil over the sea-kitten, letting it snap and spit. Serve sea-kitten with rice and steamed vegetables with garlic.

Mmmm... Sea-kitten...

Broiled or grilled sea kitten is my favorite. I'm also fond of raw sea kitten.

Canned sea kitten makes me feel ill from across the room, though.

Well, my favourite sea kitten is actually a lake/freshwater kitten...

White freshwater kitten with smetana and Finnish-style dill pickles. Incredibly easy to make: take white freshwater kitten fillets (approx. 1 small or 1/2 medium fillet per person), place in greased oven-proof dish, add salt and finely ground black pepper. Place chopped fresh dill and cubed pickles on fillets, then pour smetana on the lot. The more the better. *g* If you want, you can sprinkle some cheese (real Swiss or strong Emmentaler, not some plastic substitute) on top. Bake at 175°C until the smetana bubbles nicely, about 20 minutes or so. Serve with steamed potatoes.

I'm also partial to rainbow sea kitten with lemon, leek and parmesan. Or my mother's fantastic white freshwater kitten side dish, made with salt-cured white freshwater kitten, hard-boiled eggs, dill, onions and smetana, and served on sourdough rye bread. Omnomnom.

And now I'm hungry. Damn you all!
