Whole new levels of batshit...
Not wank in the traditional sense, but c'mon. It's PETA. They're wanky all by themselves, often without even trying. Their newest not-so-new campaign? Save the Sea Kittens!

That's right. Sea kittens.

What, you ask, is a sea kitten? Just look at your local fish market, and you can find all sorts of cruelly butchered sea kittens! Trout kittens and sole kittens and cod kittens and haddock kittens.

Yup. This batshit is to make us feel like horrible, horrible people for killing fish by calling them kittens, because what sort of monster would kill and eat a kitten?!

The site really speaks for itself, complete with a form letter to send to your congressperson, a "dress up your kitten" game, and that old PETA standby, the rather graphic, overblown "children's story" that turns animals into neuroscientists (I'm not kidding) and humans into murderers.

Personally, I enjoy my sea kittens battered and fried and served with British chips. Mmm, sea kittens and chips...

Edit: My bad, it's not new to some people.

Steamed sea-kitten with ginger and shallots.

Steamed sea-kitten with ginger and shallots. (Asian-style)

White sea-kitten is best for this purpose - it brings out the flavour better. I recommend bream or snapper - those are usually the best sea-kitten types to cook this recipe with.

Get the sea-kittenmonger to scale and gut the sea-kitten first - it's a nasty, messy job to do at home!

Chop a ginger root into julienne strips (straws) and rub on inside and out of raw sea-kitten. Put sea-kitten into a steaming basket, cover with ginger strips inside and out, and hot steam for 5-10 minutes, or until the flesh flakes away from the bone. Meanwhile, slice the shallotts (spring onions? - the green stalky parts) into 3-inch lengths, then slice them lengthwise into thin strips. When the sea-kitten is nearly cooked, pile the shallotts on top and steam for a further 2 mins.

Take out the sea-kitten and arrange on a plate, dribble half a cup of soy sauce over the flesh, then heat a quarter-cup of oil until it reaches smoking point.

Stand back from plate, and pour the oil over the sea-kitten, letting it snap and spit. Serve sea-kitten with rice and steamed vegetables with garlic.

Mmmm... Sea-kitten...
