Did you know we're responsible for the fall of civilization?
So, New Yorker film critic David Denby wrote a book called Snark: It's Mean, It's Personal, and It's Ruining Our Conversation. Tell us how you really feel, David. Or even better - how about everyone else telling us how they really feel?

(NEWSFLASH: Keith Olbermann NOT snarky. Film at 11.)

I don't think the Internet will be a better place for his example. Snark might not make for good conversation, but defensive hostility doesn't either.

Wait, what? He's not even coherent:

if you're young and you sleep around or do some cocaine at a party in college, it's going to show up on Google 10 years later. I'm sure these snarky insults have an inhibiting effect on people's behavior.

"Gee. Maybe I shouldn't post the information about my cocaine habit online."

Yes, now I see how we're ruining the world.

If we can't go somewhere without someone taking our pictures, then we're inviting ourselves to be snarked.

What?

When conversational threads collapse into racism, misogyny and Holocaust denial, that ruins the conversation for those people that are in it.

...And snark is to blame for this. Obviously.

Yes, because before the invention of snark, everyone was always perfectly civil, reasonable, and courteous, and perfect gentlemen to each other in conversation.

And you know I'm being perfectly sincere, because to be otherwise would mean I was being snarky.

I'd argue that snark can be as valid a form of criticism as any other. God knows we need a lot of laughter these days. Heck, one of my favorite writers, SJ Perelman, frequently turned in articles that bear an eerie resemblance to an MST. Not to mention Mark Twain's review of the Last of the Mohicans.

David Denby reminds me of the stereotypical, cantankerous adult who can't understand the actions of today's youth. Snark is not the only thing he's targeted. Anyone who's read his reviews of movies like Sin City and The Dark Knight will notice that he believes such films promote/glorify violence in the real world, kinda like the people who blamed the Columbine shooting on video games and The Matrix.

And yes, my icon probably sums the whole thing up better, I suppose...

In the book, I discuss how when people spoke about him during the campaign, I felt like much of the conversation was in coded racist insults. When people said he was Muslim, people were really talking about race. But racial prejudice is not something anyone can openly admit anymore. Snark is the antidote for "We don't want black people here, but we're not going to say that." I was worried he wouldn't win, and it turned out I was wrong. So many people protected our Democratic prince.

Wait... so your last sentence in this paragraph isn't snark? Seriously? Wow.

Aye, quip and you may cry. Run, and you'll get bored... at least a while. OUR SNARKAGE!

David Denby! Never have liked his movie reviews, but that's probably because my father apparently 'agrees with everything he says' even before seeing the movie.

Won't be letting him get anywhere near this book.
