Bare Feet -- Srs Bsnss
Over on Customers Suck, a poster complains about a shoeless customer coming into the restaurant where they work. In the comments ladygzb doesn't understand what the problem is.

After all, not that long ago, people of no means went barefoot as a matter of course, so why shouldn't she have the right to enter a public place with no shoes. Social conventions are meaningless. Going barefoot flaunts convention the way gay and interracial marriage does!

If your feet have a fungus it's the fault of your shoes! I went barefoot all through college and never caught anything like a fungal infection! In short, shoes are just disgusting and they make my feet hurt anyway.

And people keep on arguing with her.

She's a germophobe who spent years walking barefoot through downtown Atlanta?

Socially acceptable? Ah, hell, what does that have to do with anything? There are people who would argue that inter-racial relationships are still not "socially acceptable." I'm pretty sure that when I was a kid, showing your belly button in public wasn't "socially acceptable." Madonna's bra-on-the-outside certainly wasn't. Why did anyone care?

Socially acceptable is a ridiculous concept that runs the gamut from "bigoted" to "I'm feeling morally superior," and in most cases means nothing more than "I'm going to sneer at you because I think I'm better in some way." Why not let other people do what works for them, if it doesn't actually impact you?

Still no *rational* reason to wear shoes.

I've spent about five minutes trying to come up with a witty response, and all I have is an oscillation between, "Buh?" and, "Just because racist people have social expectations doesn't mean I can't!"

This needs more Bailey's Irish Cream. *shuffles off*

I go barefoot all the time at home (sometimes going a whole summer without shoes and socks), but I would never consider going into a restaurant or retail establishment with my bare feet. That's just gross.

We had a lady come into my parents restaurant and take off her shoes and I went up to her and told her flat out to put them back on because we can't guarantee that there isn't any broken glass on the carpet.

*snicker*:

While there may not be anything wrong with being shoeless per se, most businesses prefer to serve customers with shoes. This is because people who insist upon going barefoot everywhere tend to be argumentative crackpots.

There are none that fit me and they all hurt.

Because none of the shoe makers don't make specialty shoes for those who can't find shoes at the stores that properly fit them.

I love walking around barefoot too. But that's only when I'm at home where I'm more likely to know what's on the floor.

Social conventions also include things like "White people shouldn't marry black people" and "men shouldn't marry men." Social conventions are a cop-out.

She is seriously, SERIOUSLY comparing wearing shoes to these issues? Sweet baby Jeebus.

Why we wear shoes TL;DR:

Our feet, unlike those of our fellow primates, do not have the tough bottoms or fur-covering to protect and keep them warm. I'm looking at the paws of my cat right now and lemme tell you- his little paw pads are a lot tougher than the bottoms of my feet. ADDITIONALLY- it's called SHIT ON THE SIDEWALK. Go step on some broken glass or a rusty nail a few times and then tell me why you shouldn't have to wear shoes. I don't like shoes very much either but I'm not walking around ANYWHERE that isn't my own backyard while barefoot.

I still can't quit boggling at how she managed to separate "home" and "shoes" into two totally different concepts, when that had jack shit to do with the initial complaint, because they weren't laid out as separate concepts per se, and then claimed to find no comparison between the two. Oh, customers_suck. I think that if somebody made a post about how it sucked that they had to stop a customer from coming around the counter and sticking their hand into the deep fat fryer to grab a handful of fries or something, someone would still pop up to argue that it was a violation of the customer's right to deep fry their hands. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.
