Bare Feet -- Srs Bsnss
Over on Customers Suck, a poster complains about a shoeless customer coming into the restaurant where they work. In the comments ladygzb doesn't understand what the problem is.

After all, not that long ago, people of no means went barefoot as a matter of course, so why shouldn't she have the right to enter a public place with no shoes. Social conventions are meaningless. Going barefoot flaunts convention the way gay and interracial marriage does!

If your feet have a fungus it's the fault of your shoes! I went barefoot all through college and never caught anything like a fungal infection! In short, shoes are just disgusting and they make my feet hurt anyway.

And people keep on arguing with her.

People of no means probably didn't go to restaurants a whole lot, either.

Now, now. There is no need for logic here. This is the Land of Sparkle and in the Land of Sparkle, poor people couldn't afford shoes but they could afford meals out all the time. At the Ritz Carlton.

I'd like to see her hit the Ritz at Lenox and Phipps with no shoes on. Wonder how long it'd take her to get tossed out.

My sister told me that back in the late '60s, she and her high-school friends would go into Bergdorf, Bendel, Tiffany and several of the other upscale Fifth and Madison Avenue shops wearing their bell-bottoms, bangles and shoeless, and actually got very well-treated by the management.

Oh, I go to five-star restaurants in jeans and a nice shirt and don't dress up to high hell. If you just act like you belong, it helps. But it's hard to belong with foul feet and the 60s seemed to be a more lenient time than now.

I seriously wonder if she thinks people of no means want to be without shoes.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

And when was that?

Back in the hunter gatherer days? Because shoes of one sort or another have been around for a fuck of long time. Doesn't take a lot of money or brains to wrap some leather around your feet and tie it in place, after all.
