My broken buttons are on fire, aka Education makes you SMRT
Today's tale comes to us from the bad_service community. In short, [info]jayphi77 posts a tale of woe about a local drycleaner who charged them "too much" for cleaning 12 shirts, especially since they came back, and I quote, "smelling of smoke and broken buttons". He/she/it writes a letter to said drycleaner, including a freaking long signature which appears to include every school they've ever attended. The drycleaner responds unfavorably in a letter back to the OP, commenting on their education. The commenters call shenanigans.

That was actually where I saw it yesterday (my first time to stupid_free in about 6 moneths) I started reading this thinking "why is this so familiar?"

Funny how little sense their letter to the dry-cleaners makes considering how proud they seem to be of their apparent education. To the point they feel the need to list every school they've attended in a damn email signature, no less. Who does that?

I always thought you listed the highest only (plus where ever you're working now), since it's generally assumed that if you graduated college that you have some type of high school equivalency, and so on. It's not like being blackboard monitor of your third grade class is going to be needed to break ties.

Plus, there's this wonderful thing called a curriculum vitae that can be provided if asked. Generally speaking, dry cleaners don't care, though, unless they're hiring.

I work at McDonald's, and today we got a customer complaint from someone who'd gone through our DT yesterday, bought a Happy Meal, and hadn't gotten the toy.

Now, I understand being miffed about that, you buy the Happy Meal for your kid who will probably throw a tantrum if there's no toy, and also, the fact of the matter is, you've paid for it, you should get what you pay for, otherwise it's comparable to us just stealing your money.

But this lady wrote a half a page essay on how hysterical her kid had become and how she had to calm him down even at bed time because he was crying about not getting his toy. Now, aside from, geeze, spoiled brat much?

She also felt the need to mention that she was a politician, and an assistant to some other politician who I didn't even recognise, but the message was loud and clear.

Who writes a complaint to McD's about a missing plastic toy and includes all their occupations?

I sign my emails with my first name. If I'm being really formal (writing to deans, people I don't know or people I need to do something for me), I'll add my last name. I suppose this is a dead giveaway that I never passed second grade.

Neither do I. I only occasionally sign my name when it's a message to work or school (which may be redundant, since I use my school email for, you know, school emails, and it's possible my name is attached to that anyway).

The "smelling smoke and broken buttons" part I'll let pass, because under almost any other circumstance it could be considered witty.

But mistaking a letter of complaint for a job application is pretty damn silly.

Perhaps she should go to WTF-Drycleaner College, graduate, and then add that to her sig. Do they have sororities in Dry Cleaner College?

Okay, I may be reading this wrong, but all I'm getting from that signature is that he/she/it attended three universities and appears not to have graduated from any of them.

'Cos, you know, it's usually what your degree is in, and where you got it, not where you partied.

Also, the dry-cleaner's reply is a certain kind of win.

I think I'm kind of in love with the sassy Greek drycleaner. But that might be because his English syntax reminds me so much of the way many of the people spoke at the awesome Orthodox church I used to attend.

I was about to comment and wonder why they didn't talk to the cleaners when they picked the shirts up, but then I saw the "Let me note that your comments, in front of other customers in the store, were totally unacceptable" bit. Wtf? Look, it's okay to express your displeasure, but acting like an utter arse (I'm cynical enough to doubt they were as polite as they claimed) isn't going to help your case. Oh, and I can't help but wonder why this person didn't ask for the price when they dropped the shirts off.

Or maybe I'm doing it wrong and applying Earth logic again. *sigh*

Also: mai dry cleaning stories, let me tell you them: I work part-time at a dry cleaners (have done so for over two years now) and I can't help but feel sympathy for the manager. I have many stories of stupid arguments (and unrealistic expectations) along much the same lines as the case mentioned. What I keep boggling at is that the customer didn't ask for the price at any point and then complained about it. Uh? As for the high price: the manager explained that it was because the shirts were hand finished, which is perfectly valid. One, some shirts (particularly ladies') would be damaged by the normal process, just like the reply stated, and two, hand finishing takes a little longer. Not much longer, but if you have to hand finish twelve shirts, it's going to add up. And believe it or not, people like to get paid, so time is money.

Buh? No entry! *woes*

Regarding the long sig with the education listing, unless the person is my doctor, I will only read such titles as "Piled Higher and Deeper from the St Whatever University of Entitlement Whoring and Supreme Assholery. Discard, plz and wait until they make a real complaint"
