Madame Defarge probably isn't welcome there EITHER
Ravelry: it's like Facebook! It's for knitters and crocheters! It hit the New York Observer! It spawns four pages of grudgewank! It's like a concentration camp, in a way!

What IS it with knitters? Maybe they should pick up a hobby...

Just for the record, knitters don't bring half the crazy that crocheters do.

I get to say that. I'm a freak. I knit and crochet.

I made a nylon potholder last night. If I could find a comm for that THEN you'll see some wank, by golly!

Oh, I'm sure there's a nylon community on Rav somewhere.

I'm afraid to ask about quilters.

I don't know any quilters, so I dunno.

My great-grandma was quilter. She was also reeeealy wanky. As in believed AIDS was caused by malnutrition and a Vast Zionist Conspiracy wanky. Or possibly the Masons, I forget which. So yes, if my sample of one is accurate, quilters are wankier then hell.

She did make a really awesome quilt for me they year I was born. It's got the usual booties and bells and flowers and things, and then it has Mt. St. Helens erupting.

For this alone, I am willing to forgive your grandmother her wankiness. :)

and then it has Mt. St. Helens erupting.

Remembering my son's delicate digestive system when he was a baby, I can sort of see why she might have done this. And even if you weren't a spewer like he was, it's still hilarious.

Rock on, Granny. (Personal story: When that thing blew up I was a kid in Georgia and I thought the ash falling out of the sky was soooooo cool. Volcanic ash, ya'll!)

Quilting is about the most anal-retentive hobby I could possibly imagine, and I say this as someone who makes extremely small jewelry pieces.

So I can only guess as to what the wank level is like.

I don't know; go into any knitting community and say 'Acrylic is great!' or state the knitting style you prefer and people will go foamingly batshit before you can blink.

You and I must hang out at different knitting communities, because I haven't seen much acrylic vs. wool vs. God's Magic Pubic Hairs wank lately, and I've never seen much of a battle between English vs. Continental vs. Combined.

I don't think I've ever seen knitting style wank. But the acrylic-bashing keeps me out of most of the comms, since that's the only yarn I can afford, and I don't need to be told my work is only suitable for lining a dog bed . . . someday, I shall acquire some of God's Pubic Hair and KNIT A DOG BED OUT OF IT!

I'm allergic to wool (with the exception of cashmere, o joy); I can handle it enough to spin, knit and crochet it, but wearing it is out of the question. I don't feel in the least bit guilty about wearing synthetic fibers because I'd rather be rash-free than an itchy fiber snob! There are some fine synthetics out there and some shitty natural fibers, but some people don't want to believe that. My personal pet hate is everyone's god, Noro yarn. That's one of the few wools that will kickstart a reaction if I so much as touch it, but you'd think I kick puppies the way some people act when they find out I don't like it!

Me, I'm all about texture and durability. If it's soft and fuzzy like kittens and it's durable, I don't care if it's wool or acrylic or troll hair.

I'm wondering if a lot of those people haven't looked at acrylic since the days when it was ALL squeaky, scratchy, and horribly colored.
