I guess it should be WANK the stupid...
http://www.livejournal.com/community/mock_the_stupid/805325.html

Uncle sm0t posts a story about their difficulty in ordering a sandwich.

Then posters Opalcat and Brighchee get into a fight over one of Brightchee's icons. One that shows a woman killing a rabbit.

This is deeply traumatizing to Opalcat.

Then chasep2001 starts in on a story about a brain damaged woman who's husband wants to remove her feeding tube.

What this has to do with ANYTHING is beyond me.

Okay, I just finished reading that entry, coincidentally, and I was wondering what the whole "a starving woman disturbs me more than a woman killing a rabbit thing" was about. Okay!

I saw that icon that started the whole damned thing. I've got to admit. That was really fucking disturbing.

It's even more disturbing in the actual movie.

What movie was it?

"Roger And Me". It's a Michael Moore documentary about the closing of a GM plant.

The phrase "Pets or meat" will be forever inscribed on the inside of my brain because of that.

Ah, no wonder I haven't seen it. Michael Moore frequently causes me to injure myself through excessive eyerolling.

The woman in question had taken to raising, selling and killing rabbits as a way to pay the bills. She was very matter-of-fact about the whole thing, up to and including snapping their little bunny necks.

I was seriously creeped out by it too, but like....dude, the all caps? That's not exactly the brightest way of getting someone to quit using their freaky icon. It's a good thing Brightchee was so nice about it (although having seen his other icons, I'm guessing he might get that a lot *G*)

I might not have replied in all caps, but I can certainly understand someone freaking out like Opalcat did. I saw it and tried really really hard to convince myself that it was some staged stunt with a plushie, even though I pretty much knew it wasn't. And on the other end, yeah, it's definately good that Brightchee was cool about it otherwise it could have gotten really ugly. Probably briefly since Opalcat is the mod and could have just deleted the whole mess, but still.

Yeah, I guess seeing it out of nowhere (rather than knowing what I was going to see before I went there) would have made the reaction worse, but I still say that there's a better chance of getting a positive reaction with "that's seriously distrubing, please don't use it here again" as opposed to the all-caps threat of banning.

Then again, I shrieked "OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO CRY" the first time I saw the "God Kills Kittens" picture, so what do I know? ;)

Yeah, I do agree. All caps threats aren't as effective as a reasonably phrased request/order. But it sure as hell got the point across. :)

Well, in my history class we read Copenhagen (a dramatization type thing about the 1941 meeting in Copenhagen between Bohr and Heisenberg) and I was immediately struck by what I saw as the overwhelming slashiness. This lead to research (in which I learned that sadly, I will never understand physics no matter how hard I try), which lead to finding a picture of the two of them drinking team, which lead to the icon.

You're actually the first person to comment on it :)

Frankly, the "Your Head A Splode" icon scared me more. Then again, I saw a clip of Scanners and it bothered me not so much because heads explode, but because they take so long to actually blow up.

I was more disturbed by the Irreversible rape-scene icon at the bottom of his list, to tell the truth. Isn't that what that is?

Gosh...I must be the most hard hearted person on earth. When I saw 'Roger & Me', that didn't shock me at all. Saddened me, sure, but I'm a down to earth kinda gal. You need to eat, you go kill a damn rabbit. But I come from hearty, depression-era farm stock, so there ya go.

I'll join ya.

It's not that horrible when you look the context of the scene. IIRC the woman wasn't doing this for kicks or anything like that, she was doing it so she wouldn't starve to death or be thrown out of her house.

And thought that was the original reasoning for pets, backup food suppy.

[Waits for the Menchi jokes.]

Well, according to PBS, that's what some people did during the blitz.

I saw the movie ages ago, and honestly the rabbit killing scene didn't make an impression enough for me to remember it. If you eat meat, something's gotta die.

It's utterly riduculous! "Oh, that pooooor rabbit! I protest the cruelty of killing that innocent creature as I eat my steak and fried chicken!" Honestly, do they think the animals they eat everyday die of old age or something? Whiny little pansies.

Personally, I was impressed, this lady is actually doing something to take care of herself - isn't self-employment and ingenuenity the basis of the American ideal? She was damn skilled at skinning that rabbit.

DAMNED skilled, yes. I had no idea it all came off so easily. But then, my only prior experience is skinning my cat for dissection in Advanced Bio, and that was a sonofabitch. *nods*

I think he/she/it (chasep2001) was trying to make Opalcat look like a stereotypical animal lover who hates to see animals suffer, but doesn't care about humans. Or something.

That icon doesn't bother me at all, actually. Not sure why. Not even its little bunny feet scrabbling for help. And I've never even heard of the movie before, so I didn't have a context for it or anything.
Huh, weird.

Hmm, now I want to watch this.

And ffs people, if half of the farming practices were isolated and shown to the general populace we wouldn't get fed. Too bad the pictures couldn't come with smell.
