[info]marveen posts in bad_service about a crappy hairstylist.

[info]amazonvera lets everyone know that if you only pay $12 for a haircut, you deserve what you get and you shouldn't bitch about it.

Short but sweet worth every penny.

I'm still stunned that there are women out there with long hair who can't put it up themselves, at leaast well enough for a job interview.

I'm more concerned about how they look after they get the job.

Seriously. Some women seem afraid to get their hair cut. They want it long, no matter what, even if they have split ends from their butt to their elbows, even if it looks crappy. Get it cut short! You'll look cute as a button, and a bob is an incredibly easy haircut to work with.

I get the feeling that once they've spent that long growing it, there's some kind of weird emotional significance to it. It's like a subculture.

I had super long hair a few pre-teen years, and my mother used to comb it and it was AGONY. Nobody ever told either of us about combing from the bottom!

Whether or not a bob will work kind of depends on the type of hair you have. My hair is thin and frizzy/wavy/schizophrenic, so it really looks best if I keep it very short. However, then I have to keep getting it cut, and I'm too cheap/lazy to do that. If I have it in a bob, which I used to do when I was younger because I hated myself apparently, it just gets everywhere and tries to fro, but it quite can't manage it. It works best shoulder length; well, it won't grow any longer, so I don't know if it would work longer.

I usually just shove it into a ponytail anyway; not like I know how to do anything else with it except put a couple of hairpins into the ponytail to hold it up.

I have similar hair to you, and right now it's in this totally crappy mid-neck phase. The longest I've had my hair is shoulder-length and it SUCKS. If I don't wash it for a day it gets all sad and saggy, and the bits poking into my skin annoy me.

I shaved my head once (for a cancer fundraiser) and was surprised that it actually looked decent. Then the hair grew into a pixie cut which became a 'fro if not washed, but BEAUTIFUL when washed and combed. Not sure how to recreate that effect now without shaving.

(also, huzzah for being a hair model - free colours from pros!)

also, huzzah for being a hair model - free colours from pros!

Ahhhhh, the good old days. I miss that. (I was a hair model until I was 25 and it was fuuuuuuuuuuuuun <3) I have pictures somewhere of me in my various cuts/colours that I'd get like clockwork, every 6 months whenever the shows were on. *sighs nostalgically* I've had every colour except blue (dammit) and some pretty wild cuts too. *amused at my mum's reaction*

I later corrupted (as she put it) my sister into doing the same thing (becoming a hair model) tho she only did it once.

Now....I just put it in a ponytail and that's me for the rest of the day. Until I get annoyed and pull the hair tie out... *sheepish*

lol, mine was never that wild. Every so often the salon (which does education) would hold a class and they'd need willing subjects. I was willing to go crazy but the novices weren't! XD

Yeah, I always got chosen because I was willing to go all out, unlike some of the girls at the casting call. (mind you, this one girl, I totally DO NOT blame her - she had nearly floor-length hair and the stylist wanted to chop pieces off it. Not cut the whole thing but like...just parts of it. Too wild for her, so she flounced off home. *chuckles*)

Now I'm more like that girl, not willing to let anyone near my hair until I get desperate. I value my long hair (or what's left of it...the hairdressers here still seem to like chopping it off *wibbles*).

Not all of us really do look cute as a button that way, unfortunately. I also always wanted black hair, and I can't swing that either.

I do make at least some effort to get rid of the split ends, though.

. . . er, no.

With my hair cut short I look like the unfortunate offspring of David Bowie and a shag rug.

Some need their hair long to frame the face. I'd look ridiculous with short hair, not cute.

Yeah, like me. The shortest I get is a little longer than shoulder length.

I would probably look cute with it bobbed - I certainly did as a child.

But I like it long, so it stays long. And trimmed so the ends aren't gross (usually, I do get lazy about it sometimes), and really, wtf does it matter to you?

It's true. I went in a couple of weeks ago to have all of my long hair lobbed off, and the people at the salon were kind of shocked as apparently they've had several women with long hair that freaked out when it was being cut off, and I just twiddled my thumbs.

'Course, it wasn't the first time I've had over a foot of hair cut off, either, and I used to keep my hair short for years, so maybe I'm desensitized?

I've never learned how to do it well. I had short hair from the time I was 7th grade until I was grown, and my mom had short hair so nobody ever taught me how. When my hair's long, like it is now, I look for classes on such things but never find any. For job interviews and the like, I usually pull the sides back with a clip and call it good.

I was never taught, I just got a bunch of clips, figured it couldn't be that hard, and messed around until I came up with three or four styles that work for everything.

of course occasionally I looked like I had a beer stein on my head, but it was a price worth paying.

I can't do it that way - my hair is deceptively unruly. It looks all smooth and straight and well-behaved until you try to get it to do something. Then it becomes Teenage Rebel Hair. So my experimentations have pretty much all gone the "beer stein on the head" route, alas.

Nice trick for making it look good with minimum effort is plaiting the back and looping it up in a clip on the back of your head. Went through sixth form like that, used to surprise people when I left it down.

There are some good books on how to do hair (I have both the kids' one and the "grown-up" one from Klutz Press, and they taught me, with some modification, how to french braid my own hair).

Unfortunately my hair is now too long for a lot of styles, and my bangs get in the way of others, but I'm pretty cool with variations on braids and buns, or just a headband.

I can French braid and do fishbone, though I'm out of practice. I have to do it with my hair wet, though.

that was kinda how I felt. I can almost sit on mine, and I know a half dozen different ways to put it up, and at least 2 are acceptable for a job interview most anywhere.

I usually only wear the top half pulled back, with it straight down my back. Of course, it doesn't curl and just lies there, so it looks fine. Til the wispy bits come out.

Late to this party, but: I couldn't put my hair up in a vaguely professional manner until I got about a foot chopped off of it a month ago. There was just too much of it.

And you know what? I didn't fully realize how bored I had been with it until I actually got it cut.
