Pound for pound this is one of the most befuddling wanks I've seen
A question about a common symbol leads to three pages of cross-Atlantic warfare.

There's really nothing more to say.

Wow, it's amazing how much wank-mileage they've gotten out of such a simple question.

Personally, I like "octothorpe." It's the most pretentious-sounding option.

OMG, this was very funny! I really hate when people refuse to acknowledge that things outside your hometown are not always done/pronounced/named... the same as the way YOU do/call/name it. It's such a pet peeve of mine.

Oh and we, in America, do have the £ sign on our keyboards! I so wanted to reply there and had to physically stop myself from doing so. You just have to know where to find it. (On a Mac keyboard, it's *option/3*, which ironically is also where the POUND sign (#) can be found.)

I remember when I first moved to England, and I was listening to some sort of automated message service on my phone, and the robo-woman said, "Please enter your number, followed by the hash key." I went, "What? What? WHAT IS A HASH KEY??" Somehow, through my random button-smashing, everything worked out fine.

(This amused me so much that I just surveyed my family: "sharp", "tic-tac-toe board", "hash", "pound", and "Nethack corridor symbol" were all offered up as possible answers. Diversity is good!)

My favourite comment in the whole thing. From now on, whenever I am tempted to wank, I am just going to mash on the pound hash number wank key instead.

This wank makes me unreasonably happy. I don't know why. I suppose it's because I can totally imagine Fry and Laurie doing a skit about it, Fry being the particularly snippy Brit and Laurie being the particularly thick American. Fry and Laurie make everything awesome.

I am surprised at the number of people who knew that # could also refer to pounds a.k.a. lbs. I didn't realise that was common knowledge — because I didn't know! And if I didn't know, god knows it can't be common knowledge. o_O

The Snark Mark!
[info]criticalcricket
2009-03-02 03:26 pm UTC (link)
Oddly enough, I brushed up on my # knowledge when the ampersand wank came up, so I knew that it came about by some arcane deformation of "lb".

I wonder what symbol we'll see wank about next. This one looks promising:
The irony mark or irony point (؟) (French: point d’ironie; also called a snark or zing) is a proposed punctuation mark that was suggested to be used to indicate that a sentence should be understood at a second level.

It's perfect! I saw we adopt it as our very own!

I can't believe you are wrote "Pound for pound" in the OP. Please change this immediately, as it is not metric, which is a more international system. "Kilo for Kilo" would be far more inclusive.
